Mouse support for a Windows App ought to be a given. Plex Media Player is mouse driven. I have uninstalled HTPC Plex because it was the only Windows App on my Windows 10 HTPC that was not mouse driven and went back to Plex Media Player. I understand that for many platforms mouse driven is not an issue, however, for Windows Apps mouse driven is the norm.
If you want mouse support, use “Plex [Player] for Windows”.
It’s made for that.
I disagree. If I wanted to navigate with a mouse Plex for Windows makes a lot more sense and is already a good, feature packed program. Plex for Windows is absolute garbage to navigate with a keyboard or controller. There is no reason to use Plex for HTPC if mouse is your thing. It’s UI is not made for mouse input.
Having trouble with the screen glitching when moving around the app in 30 Hz, 12 bit color. Gets better at 60Hz, 8 bit color. I have a Nvidia geforce rtx 2060 super.
Then they should not label it as an htPC WINDOWS app. Leave it as “Plex Home Theater,” as soon as they say it is a PC WINDOWS App, the mouse input option should be included. Any developer creating an app intending to run on a PC using Windows would include mouse control. That is a default expectation for software running on Windows. Which is exactly what Plex did for their other products aimed at Windows users. “I have this app for Windows, but it is not going include mouse input functions,” would be odd. Since I worked as a developer for over 20 years before I switched careers in my early 40’s, that kind of design decision for a Windows destined application would have been an anomaly and would have been discussed before that anomaly being approved. Telling me you have an HTPC product for my Windows 10 PC, yet no mouse input, that is odd.
I was wondering if we can get “sweet fades” on the other plex apps. I still use Plex-Amp for 95% of my music playing but when I occasionally play a few songs in the htpc app for example, it’d be nice to have the great transitions on other devices.
Also, I searched for this but saw no mention of it… any way to stop the music images & Lyrics to stop switching sides every 30 secs or so, in Plex-HTPC App?
1 more thing… The music stops during playback if I try to browse other Artists etc, in Plex-HTPC App. Is this native to the HTPC version or all Plex Apps now? Anyway to have it behave so one can browse while music is playing like it used to do?
Thanks much
I saw in the reddit post that Bluetooth is supported for Xbox One controllers. Is there any plan to support the official windows wireless USB adaptor for these controllers? Bluetooth on my pc is super janky so it’d be nice to be able to use the more stable connection.
For mouse support, use Plex for Windows/Mac. Plex HTPC is designed for keyboard or remote support. The use of Windows/Mac is only used in this case so that people can download the correct version for their platform. Arguably, PHT was also an app, that ran on Windows. Mouse support is not a focus for Plex HTPC, as we already have Plex for Windows/Mac which uses the same playback engine, but supports a more mouse friendly UI (and doesn’t have quite as many HT options).
Problem deleting files. Much improved method of deleting files, but my Win10 version gave me an error message after deleting two files: “Unable to delete item. Please check that this file exists and has appropriate permissions.” After confirming that the file existed, I exited the HTPC and successfully deleted the file and several others using PMP.
Thank you DaveBinM.
So if someone is driving their home theater with a Windows 10 PC and wants to use Plex, you have designed HTPC Plex for Windows so that user can use a remote control, instead of a media keyboard with mouse capability, to control Plex?
I mentioned both remote control and keyboard control, so either a remote, or a keyboard is fine, just don’t expect mouse support. So their media keyboard should work just fine.
Just use the arrow keys, man. Or Plex for Windows if it suits you better. Don’t pick this hill to die on.
I am a long way from dying on a hill. I just went back to Media Player because with a mouse pad on my media keyboard it is a lot easier to use Plex with a mouse than with just key strokes. The HTPC version was put out with an invitation to make comments. I made mine, apps for Windows ought to include mouse support.
Yes, keyboard control is possible. It is not as easy as mouse control, but it does work. For kicks I compared the process needed to delete a program after viewing. Much easier with the mouse pad on my media keyboard in Plex Media Player for Windows than with Plex HTPC for Windows.
My twin brother uses a remote app on his smart phone to control his Windows HTPC. Plex HTPC would perfect for him.
I use the “PC” part of my HTPC a lot. Facebook, email, Amazon, Google, etc. I need a keyboard with a mouse pad to facilitate that kind of expanded use. Plex HTPC for Windows was not designed for users like me. Fortunately, all I had to do was go back to Plex Media Player for Windows.
Everyone that saw the posting about Plex HTPC was asked to try it and give feedback about using HTPC. I gave mine, I think Windows apps by default ought to have mouse input ability built in.
Hi @middlfam - Trust me, change is always a little painful, but have you ever considered a wireless Media Remote from Amazon? They start at around £10 or so… The one I got for £15 is awesome! and its backlit!
That way, you could use your kb+mouse when it’s more convenient to do so, and a wireless Media remote for consuming media.
Now there’s an idea.
It is not just about change, the mouse enabled version is easier to use than using keystrokes. As I was playing with both versions last night, watching me navigate around the HTPC version with keystrokes (I printed off the list of keystrokes so I could give the HTPC vesion a good use) my wife, who was sitting near by, after watching me use the keystroke version said, “That’s ridiculous.” Moving a mouse cursor and clicking on the function, pretty simple and easy.
Your idea has merit. I might just have to try that.
No worries. Hopefully it’ll be like a breath of fresh air ![]()
I’m having issues with playback on the new app vs the old HTPC app. Audio stutters and sometimes doesn’t play at all, even when my AVR supports the format. passthrough mode on the old app works just fine still.
I’ve noticed for both, audio will periodically cut out for like a second, but it happens more on the new app.
While watching a channel on Live TV & DVR I noted there was not way to bring up the guide or change the channel without backing completely out of the currently playing channel. basically can’t see what’s on next, or on another channel with out stopping playback.
No, I think you are very much dying on a hill. Several people in this thread have pointed you towards Plex for Windows. You then keep ranting on about how WiNdoWS NeeDS MoUsE and how you have to go back to the legacy player Plex Media Player.
Plex HTPC is an app that clearly isn’t made for people like you who wants to use mouse to navigate. It’s target audience is people who have a PC (doesn’t have to be Windows) and is using it primarily as a media center and nagivates it with a controller, a remote or by a non-mouse driven keyboard.
Plex for Windows however is made for people who want to use a mouse and it’s UI is very good in that regard. This app is not suited for the target audience of Plex HTPC as it is awful to navigate with a controller, exactly because it has a mouse-driven UI.
This entire conversation feels like when my granddad is compaining about something changing on his smartphone. Because I know he won’t listen to me anyway. The way you just skip over the fact that an app for mouse input already exists is very much like that.
