Plex HTPC not playing nice with the Plex app

I have recently upgraded my HTPC from Win 7 to Win 10 so that I can take advantage of the EPG in Plex HTPC. The EPG in Windows Media Center (RIP) was great and is one thing I wanted in Plex for sooooo long. But I have come to regret upgrading to Plex HTPC (which is a shame because Plex HTPC is a huge improvement over the old Plex Media Player in so many ways) because I have a number of issues with it.

I use the Plex App on my phone to choose what I want to watch or listen to and it worked perfectly well with the old Plex Media Player. But since upgrading I have found Plex HTPC does not play nice with the Plex app on my phone.

I have found that:

  • The Plex app on my phone takes a little while to connect to the server.

  • When playing any media (TV episodes, Movies, Music) the progress/seek bar does not work, i.e. the time elapsed and seek indicator (apologies I don’t know the proper name for it) does not work.

A video of the behavior in the Plex app as described can be found here:

Another issue I have with with Plex HTPC is that media will play, but if watching TV episodes it does not advance to the next episode at the end of the current episode and all I get is a blank black screen, or if playing music only the first track is played and does not automatically advance to/play the next track and Plex HTPC just displays the information for the current track.

I have tried rebuilding the database (that has been an issue for me in the past when PMP stopped working) but that has failed to resolve the issue and I’m not sure what to troubleshoot next so any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
