PLex I love ya but sometimes your Metadata finder is just broken

SO here’s the issue I’m sure some of you have the same issue but this is a bit different too,
Now You know how sometime PMS will find the info for your shows or movie and sometimes its finds everything but the episode title and you end up typing the titles in yourself or have to use another application to type them in per episode just so PLex doesn’t do it again.

Well I say this is different because Plex found the shows metadata all of it when I go to pop in Season 2 dins it all the title, shows info, etc. ok everything is good, but however, this is where it breaks as I went to first season PLex scanned on its own then the episode titles are gone and are titled in a file format i.e.

The Mandalorian- S01E01 - Chapter-One - The Mandalorian.mp4
gets changed to The.Mandalorian.2019.1080p.BlueRay…x264.mp4

Within plex that is the title, It’s not the episode name at all just the file format for some reason when it didn’t do it before, and it did this for the entire series tired refreshing meta, re-scanning library, unmatching and rematching nope wants to use that filename regardless if I have it renamed on my drive dunno wtf happened but it matched everything perfectly when I went to rip it and transfer Plex just decided have a seizure on me and go Oh that’s not the right Title let me retitle it for you!

No Idea why it decided to change it like that but it did and it’s frustrating since I had to retype the ep titles manually…

3 dots next to library –> manage library → edit –> advanced

Uncheck that and rescan the library

.mp4 files sometimes have embedded metadata which you can remove manually or disable Plex from choosing as the title

I actually have that unchecked and was one of the things checked to see if it were off and it was.

If you ever manually change a title inside Plex you have to lock the field so it doesn’t change when you refresh the metadata

You really should never have to do that unless the show itself can’t be matched. If the show matches the show titles should too unless it’s a brand new show that doesn’t have a title yet.

Every title inside your file system needs the “s01e01” format for TV shows
The Mandalorian (2019)/Season 01/The Mandalorian - S01E01 - Chapter-One - The Mandalorian (how it should be on your file system)

I’m not sure where Plex is getting “The.Mandalorian.2019.1080p.BlueRay…x264.mp4” but a title like that shouldn’t exist in or around a TV show folder or you will have problems

If you changed the name on your file system and a rescan/refresh metadata isn’t working you might have to plex dance the show

Please call the Plex Media Info XML of that episode and copy the first ~20 lines from the XML and paste them in here, please.
(don’t worry if they don’t appear at first in the post. I can repair this)

Yeah I’m not sure either, but yeah I lock the title after renaming too it’s just weird because It was fine found the titles even after I uploaded season 2 and it scanned it in found the titles for the second season then 10-15 min. later rescans and gives me that title.

The rest of the metadata info is fine I just find it odd that it just decided to have this hiccup and re-title it to a filemormat

Did you perform a quality upgrade on the Mandalorian episode?
Because it has a correct title and it is even in a MKV container, from where Plex is not reading any embedded titles.

Same goes for the Big Sky episode. It has a perfectly fine title of “Pilot”.
But the XML is also telling us that the title field has been locked. <Field locked="1" name="title"/>

that is probably because I had to copy and paste the ep titles form TVDB,
I will look for other shows too that are similar and send them before I begin retyping the ep titles

That doesn’t sound likely.

The wrong title you’ve been citing doesn’t fit the actual file name, which isn’t even using the same container format.
There is no way this could have come from either Plex’s metadata service, nor from embedded meta tags in the MKV file.

So it needs to be examined how it got into your server.
The only explanation I can think of is that these wrong titles used to be embedded into older versions of the video files, which you may have been replacing.

There might also have been a conversion of the tv show library from old to new metadata agent, which could have contributed to the mixup.

that may be it. I am searching for other shows in my library atm to see if the naming scheme is similar to the two shows I’ve provided. I just find it odd how it names them all properly then suddenly it renames it to that format. Because all my shows are titled like this.

Show Title - S01E01 - Episode Title

most of the shows pick up the metadata properly, but some leave the title like what I claim but leave the info and everything else alone. It doesn’t do it tall my shows just some and I end up manually editing the title. But this is a very weird and different issue because the episodes were all titled properly when plex found it then it just scanned it again and went to that format.

Just to rule it out: check the health of your database file.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 5 minutes
  6. fetch log files and attach them here

Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log file and seek for messages about database corrupt or malformed.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.
