Episode numbers showing up for some episodes but not all in TV Shows Library

Server Version#: 1.29.0.6244
Plex Web Version #: 4.87.2
Operating System: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 5.15.0-48-generic x86_64)

Greetings. I recently observed that in the Plex Web interface (as well as the Android interface), some new shows are appearing with the episode number for the episode name, while other episodes are appearing with the correct episode name. Observe the screen shots below.

Is this caused by incomplete EPG data?

Thinking your issue may be similar to the one I posted a short while back.

Symptom is the same, except I posted as the title not populating. My problem would also show episode number. If I clicked on the edit pencil, the title was blank. If I manually added the title, then everything displayed correctly.

Never received any feedback on possible solution, but have noticed improvement in the past several days. (Improvement meaning fewer TV recordings showing up with episode number and blank title.)

Sorry no help, but thought I would let you know you are not alone with this problem.

If you refresh the metadata does it fix it?

What agent are you using?

I’ve actually seen fewer episodes getting named over the past week. Weird…

A refresh of the meta data does not fix it.

TheTVDB

In my case refreshing the metadata does not fix it unless I manually populate the title and sort title. I am also using theTVDB agent.

Can you try using the newer Plex agent? Might be a bug in the legacy agent.

Can you direct how to do that? I don’t see that being an option.

Library => Manage Library => Edit => Advanced.
Scanner and agent should be the Plex TV Scanner

After you change the agent, I think it will prompt you to refresh the metadata for the library

The default show order is TMDB

Change it to TVDB in the episode order first if that’s what you’ve been using

Thanks for the guidance. It looks like those settings were already in place.

Please find one of the episodes without a title and get info => view xml and post that.

Not to hijack @dugiehowsa thread, but thought I would go ahead and post an example I have. I hope this helps.

Here’s the file name for the TV show in the xml code above:
Bull (2016)/Season 06/Bull (2016) - S06E15 - With These Hands.ts

If you refresh the metadata for the show does it change? taking a look at the xml it is missing the match data. I would expect to see:
<Guid id="imdb://tt18554538"/>
<Guid id="tmdb://3448060"/>
<Guid id="tvdb://9039298"/>

Its behaving like its unmatched.

Refreshing the metadata for the show causes no change. I’ve typically been copying the episode name in the Title and Sort fields.

In my original thread I had included a debug log for another show. At that time the problem was happening on every recording. Today it’s happening on about 50% of the recordings.

Try doing the Plex Dance on the file.

Curious is the suggestion of the Plex Dance to help with troubleshooting or fix the issue? If it helps with troubleshooting, happy to give it a try. If the suggestion is to fix the specific issue, it is much easier to copy the episode name into the title field.

Hoping to find what might be causing the issue. Previously checked the database for corruption and none was found. Followed the steps in this article https://support.plex.tv/articles/repair-a-corrupted-database/ but no difference in results.

Its a troubleshooting issue, because I am not seeing the guid that should be there, it means plex isnt properly matching the episode. Plex dancing may help identify the issue.

Completed the Plex Dance on the file. After rescanning the library, same result - Title field is blank and name showing episode 16.
