Plex Ignores Subtitle Files

Server Version 1.20.1.3252:

I am installing plex and loading media for the first time. I have a series with subtitle files (named correctly), but plex does not detect them. If I upload the subtitle file from my desktop using the web client, then the subtitles appear as an option for just the one episode where I upload the file (it doesn’t even seem to overwrite the file on the backing storage pool).

I have…

  • completely rebuilt the database,
  • toggled the “Local Media Asset” option in both TV and Movie settings,
  • deleted/reuploaded the subtitle files to my storage pool,
  • ensured the subtitle files are UTF-8,
  • rescanned the library files,
  • cleaned the bundles,
  • double checked file/directory permissions,
  • and optimized the database.

The subtitles are still not visible from the web client. I am at a loss for what to do.

Here are the log files (including a text dump of my directory tree), but I cannot find any related error messages. https://www.dropbox.com/t/9j5GP6W73kDL6UJV

EDIT: it’s always the last thing you check… it resolved itself when I did “Manage Library” -> “Refresh All Metadata”

When you edit your tv show library
and go to the tab ‘Add Folders’
it should show exactly the path /mnt/magnesia_pool/plex_data/library/TV Shows
Not even one folder level above, nor below that.

Please do also take a look into the Plex XML info of the first episode
and copy the contents of the guid="... property into here.

btw. your zip archive used no compression at all. Something isn’t right.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks for the reply. I had the folder correct.

I just finished editing my question. I think what happened is I had local media enabled for “TheTVdb” but had switched this series to use “TheMovieDatabase” before adding the subtitles. I’m guessing there was just some weird mismatch between it matching with one agent seeing now subtitles, changing the agent, then getting subtitles… or whatever.

Yeah, I uploaded the directory after I added that dump of the tree command… I guess I assumed there was compression involved with that directory transfer thing. It’s been a long night.

To clarify, the solution for me was:

  1. Double check local media assets in ALL agents by toggling them and making sure it sticks when switching between tabs
  2. Refresh all metadata for the library.
  3. Profit.
