Plex Iive TV and DVR advice,

About 3 months ago I attempted to install the Plex TV - DVR on my Plex Server and I ran in to some compatibility/conflicts with our HOME RUN Quatro Tuner and the Home Run DVR DVR service I was wondering if others have or had the same issues and how you were able to fix it.

My set up is simple, PMS loaded on an I7 Desktop Windows 10 PC with a Netgear NAS as a storage unit… all is working well with my Plex Media Server and I am thrilled with all it’s capabilities… so, I bought a lifetime PLex Pass!

In seeing the new Plex TV -DVR service come on board I decided to install it and it worked somewhat… but it has several issues with my set up because I also have the Silicon Dust Quatro tuner (which works great) and the Home Run DVR service. I had severeal problems with the set up were causing issues using the Silicon Dust DVR subscription at the same time as trying to use the Plex TV -DVR service I contacted Silicon dust and they pretty much said that their Tuner - DVR program pretty much takes control of the tuner and makes it almost impossible to use the PLEX TV set up along with it… Even if I am using a different tuner on the Quatro and different programs… but what happens is the Silicon Dust stops recording and the PLex starts to show errors…

I have a few more months of the Silicon Dust TV - DVR subscription and I was hoping to use the Plex system rather than paying another 35.00 for another subscription of the SD program - Service. So I have been reading the threads on here and it seems like the Plex TV - DVR is still having quite a few issues… Would you say that the system is working enough that I can get a reliable recording of the TV shows I follow or is it still a bit flaky? I’d really like to think that i could just transition to the PLex TV set up but on the other hand I do want a reliable set up so the shows record when we are not home to watch them…

Any comments are more than welcome… I really like the idea of PLEX and how it is working as a Media server… Now if the PLex TV - DVR system can get squared away and solid for recording I"ll be all set!

Dave

I also read a lot of threads on here with people having a lot of problems with the Live TV/DVR service. However, I rarely have problems with mine and I’ve been using it for about 6 months. I do get the occasional failed to record which I’m not able to track down, but it’s rare.

My setup is a WD PR2100 NAS that runs the server, with a HD Homerun Prime (Spectrum Cable Card). My recordings rarely fail and always include the full show/movie (even using the built in commercial skip) Before I had my PR2100, I ran my PMS from a similar setup to yours and it worked fine as well.

One issue I ran into: I watch live TV on an nVidia Shield. I had it streaming via a wireless connection (which had full strength from my router). I kept getting the weak signal error when watching live TV for no apparent reason. So I ran an ethernet cable to the the Shield about 4 months ago and I haven’t had a problem since. This is most likely an issue with the Shield and not Plex.

This service is not perfect by any means, but it’s only going to get better and better as they work out the kinks. I think you’d be happy with the setup.

While there are threads where people do encounter issues (which we do endeavour to investigate and solve where we can!), I’ve personally been using DVR since release (and before my time as an employee of Plex), and have had a really good experience with it.

cardccowsports, Thanks for your reply, well, it sounds encouraging that you are having good luck with the set up… I have my subscription to the HomeRun service thru the end of this year… Of course there is no need for 2 services so I"d like to use the one provided by Plex and save the $35.00 per year cost of the HomeRun Subscription. If I miss a show here or there I"m not really upset about it. …I can always find it somewhere but as long as it isn’t to frequent I can deal with that.

I think my current NAS and the WD ex4100 I have on order both support PMS, I know I can install it on the NetGear 204 but I am told that the processors in these units are not good for Trans-coding… but, saying that I don’t think I have a need for Trans-coding at all, with a GB home network all hard wired I"m not too worried about bandwidth. I think when I stream a movie at home to my TV or Media device it’s at what ever resolution the video file is.

Thanks again for the reply and anyone else that might what to chime in.

DaveBinM, Thank you very much for Chiming in and letting me know that Plex is continuing to support the Plex TV and DVR functions for the Plex Members. I have to admit, I am a new user of the Plex Media Server system and I have to say… I love what you folks have put together on the Media side… I"m still learning and I quickly signed up for the Plex Pass to take advantage of some of the advanced features. Prior to signing on to Plex I had invested in the Silicon Dust Quatro tuner and their Subscription service. About 3 months ago or so I installed the Plex TV - DVR on my PMS (loaded on a Desktop computer) and I was running in to a few issues which seems to be conflicts between the SD TV-DVR service and PLex TV… I did contact Silicon Dust and their only comment was that the Quatro Tuner pretty much takes over control with their TV-DVR service and it seemed to give me some issues… .so for the time being I just unloaded the Plex TV-DVR function and use the SD program for now. As I mentioned earlier my service thru SD is through the end of the year and I would like to change over to Plex TV -DVR with my Plex Pass once my subscription to the SD service expires.

In the mean time, Dave, if you would like to know more of my issue and conflicts I’d be glad to do that in an email conversation if your interested… Feel free to drop me a message… I"d be glad to explain my issues…

Dave

@davidki Let’s keep things in the forums  I believe both Plex, and SD’s DVR expect to have exclusive control of the tuners, so you can encounter issues trying to use both. For the best experience, only use the one DVR (I’d hope you’d pick Plex!). If you have issues while only using one, feel free to post in here, and see what we can do to help

DaveBinM, No Problem I’m happy to keep it here! I think you are correct that both are trying to control the Tuners and SD said they are very aggressive at that… so for now I"ll just continue with the SD set up I have, it’s working just fine but, Once the Annual Subscription is up with SD I"ll switch over to PLEX TV and give it another run with out the SD DVR service… I"m sure I’ll find PLEX just fine and with it included in my PLEX Pass it is a real bonus (hopefully they don’t change that in the future). Thanks for chiming in.
