Plex in Docker Not Getting Metadata about Music

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486 in Docker

Player Version#: Web Browsers

For about one year, I have had version Server 1.25.2.5319 running in Docker on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. It has been running great, and I have always enjoyed a full set of metadata for all my music library.

Now, I have installed 1.30.0.6486 on a new, much more powerful server (also running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) and this version of PLEX refuses to fetch any detailed metadata for my music.

My audio files were copied exactly from one server to the other. PLEX on the new server shows me all of my music, including cover art, but none of the additional metadata details – genre, style, bio, etc – show up for the majority of my albums. In addition, many album sets – even though they are in separate subdirectories of a single directory – are failing to show some of the titles. The titles show up if I search for them, but not under the artist. I’d say I was in metadata hell.

As far as I can see, I have selected the same scanning options on both servers. I have “refreshed” my metadata several times and I never see any improvement.

I have looked at the logs and unfortunately I’m not seeing any obvious culprit such as a permissions error. In fact, I have also run “tail -f” on the entire log directory during scanning and I’m not seeing anything that could explain why I’m not getting the metadata I expect. It looks as if XML files are getting created for each album in the metadata directory on my filesystem, but the information for genre, style, bio, etc. is empty in most cases.

I would appreciate some suggestions about how to troubleshoot this. It is really frustrating. I was getting ready to start paying for PLEX PASS but this is a show-stopper.

I DO NOT have these issues with Jellyfin using the exact same media directory.
