Plex server is on a Windows computer (16GB Memory, SSD, i5 processor) and 60MB download, 4MB upload Internet.
Plex Player set at 3MB for Online and Remote quality. Using MacBook Pro (Sierra & Safari) over wireless connection speed 800mbps on a 60MB download and 4MB upload.
When Remote Access is enabled, I am experiencing lots of buffering almost every few minutes however once Remote Access is disabled and the Plex connection shows as Indirect, I am able to watch an entire movie without any buffers and the quality is just as good.
Why is Indirect yielding better results than direct?
Check your wireless settings. If you have any type of ‘isolation’ enabled, disable it. The indirect shows because the GDM protocol ports are most likely not open / being transmitted. When you run with “Remote Access” enabled, you use port 32400/TCP only. The limits of your network connect and wifi will be the limiting factors (however they interact).
Start checking these points and see if you can ping your plex server on these ports. Fix any you can’t get access to

‘Indirect’ is restricted to 2mbps max. This may indicate a bandwidth/capacity problem with your network.
