Plex Ios Keeps crashing partway through film or tv playback

I have only the Feb 12th crash too on my side but i don’t remember this one. But i have track the last crash from Feb 24th 04:27:34.972.

The Ipad log in com.plexapp.plex xxxx .log show no error, it’s just repeated lines of playing until it stop and the app restart. I have wait +3min before i restart the app, it’s very clear in the log.

The server log show:

handleStreamWrite code 104: Connection reset by peer
NotificationStream: Removing because of error

And transcoding continue for 3 min until:

Shutting down idle session xxxxxxx (idle time is 180 seconds)
Killing job.

There is still something weird on the Ipad log into Plex Media Server.log. I can see a lot of Network error and maybe it cause a overflow since these lines repeat every 100ms.

There is way more lines, the log is full of it, and the log file stop on the crash time. I must open another file to see the log when app restart.

I often turn on the Ipad, remove the airplane mode and start Plex but even the wifi is ON, the app take some time to detect the network and the server. Maybe the fact the app is launched without network make hang some process in a loop and produce all these errors and after a while it’s a out of memory.

Is there no other way to share the full log files, something private like sending them by email to plex admin instead of here in a public forum ?

hbrunotv did you check ios settings > privacy > analytics & improvements > analytics data > PlexMobile-datestamp.ips ?

Yes, there is only one ips file for the Feb 12th. I don’t remember this one but the app crashed a lot between and there is no ips file for them. Specially for the Feb 24th. I guess the crash i see the most don’t produce ips files.

I had a dozen recently, but today only 1 from a couple days ago

but if you keep an eye out, you can drop them into a reply here or save them for a PM whoever wants them.

I’ve been trying to email them to myself, so I can forward as needed.

@hbrunotv As @darcilicious says you can send them to me via DM, but I’m very surprised we don’t get them via Crashlytics and you can’t see them in your device either :scream:

Im having the same issue but for plex for mac. The playback keeps pausing every so often and then I have to close it reopen then it throws me an error on UI stating “You have too many active streams” even though I am using one device. This has been happening for weeks now and I am getting frustrated. Can someone take a look and help. Not really sure how to read these logs.Plex Media Server.log (39.7 KB)

This crash makes me want to throw my iPad out the window like a frisbee.

Two more crashes so far today. Here is the info from Analytics.

This isn’t just a ‘once-in-awhile’ bug. It’s every day, multiple times a day.

Devs, is there any information I can provide to help get this fixed?

@DaveBinM @TeknoJunky @sergiou87 Any news about this issue ? I have send a lot of debug log to sergiou87 but not replay, no news…

I have debug log after every crash for the full month of march, 9 crash in total. I really have the feel it’s a memory leak. I use my ipad only for plex and each time i start Plex, it resume, i see the previous screen. It mean that it keep memory usage across days and crash every 2 or 3 days depending on how much time i use it.

I should test to kill the app every day before i use it but this way i will bet it will not crash.

I haven’t been using my phone for plex much for the last few weeks due to working from home, but the was still getting random crashes up til then.

Basically, I appreciate you sending me all those logs but they’re not useful to me, I need the crash report that either tvOS or iOS generates for this specific crash. For some reason the crash reports you and other people have sent me are not related to this crash in particular, so I think tvOS/iOS is not generating them.

I’ve also tried to reproduce the problem, but it has worked flawlessly for me so far :frowning:

It could be a memory leak, but I haven’t seen an increased memory usage while playing stuff, or at least nothing crazy. What iPad do you use?

I use the latest basic Ipad 2019, ipad 7 if i remember well. Since few days i kill the app before i use it and have not see any crash even after 2 or 3h of use.

I really think it’s a memory leak that stack across days since i use the Ipad only for Plex. The app resume on latest screen i have use and keep the memory state of previous sessions until it’s too big and crash. When you make test, most of the time the app start freshly with cleaned memory use.

Other users may not see this crash if they use the Ipad for something else since the OS will kill Plex to free memory for other apps in use. It’s not my case.

It’s probably the “not crazy” increase that never reset and crash after 2 or 3 days with 2-3h session every day.

Weird… I’ve done some profiling with Apple’s Instruments app, looking for memory leaks during video playback (or anything) and I couldn’t see anything. Even if it was a memory leak, you should have a crash report in your device indicating this Out of Memory error.

If you have updated iOS, have you checked if it has generated new crash reports? Maybe it has finally generated crash reports for this crash, if it was an iOS bug the reason why those crash reports weren’t generated :thinking:

I am having the same issue on my iPad Mini. It usually does not occur until after I have been watching for a couple of hours, although it does occasionally occur quicker. The app will randomly close an the iPad returns to the home screen. No error messages come up. If there is anything I can do to help with finding this issue, please let me know.
