Plex iptv 2024

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8854

This post has 2 parts. 1) PLEX ITPV native support and 2) has anyone tried the Xtreme HD IPTV subscription with Plex.

  1. IPTV Native Support
I did a bit of searching and could not find anything recent related to native support on the PLEX forum for IPTV. I did however find this article on Medium.com titled “How to Watch IPTV on Plex in 2024 — A Step-by-Step Guide” In this article, a bit more than halfway down and after the xTeVe directions, it makes reference to what seems to be native support for IPTV as a tuner.

Blockquote

Plex Live TV & DVR (BETA)

Plex now offers native functionality to add IPTV under Live TV & DVR. This eliminates the need for middleware like xTeVe.

To use it:

  • Head to Live TV & DVR in Plex Settings
  • Click Set Up Live TV & DVR
  • Select IPTV instead of a TV Tuner
  • Input M3U playlist URL
  • Add XMLTV URL if available

I’ve already got a few Hauppauge tuners and a HDHomeRun PRIME with a cablecard and when I click Add Another Device on the Live TV & DVR page It seems to be looking for additional hardware devices plus an option to enter an IP Address or Hostname manually, but I don’t see a choice of IPTV vs TV Tuner. Is the article incorrect? Am I looking in the wrong place? Does it not work if I already have tuner devices configured?

  1. An Xtreme HD IPTV subscription looks like an extremely attractive option to use as source for PLEX Live TV & DVR. They do claim to be “legal” and are US based from my research. My cable company looks to be discontinuing support for Cable Cards and potentially anything but streaming (they sent me 3 new TiVo based streaming boxes as replacements for my 2 set top boxes and my 1 cablecard). Does anyone have any experience with this IPTV provider, or any other IPTV providers other than this one? Does 1 provider stand out for anyone who has IPTV working and if so, which one?

Sounds wrong. For all I know, Plex doesn’t offer a direct integration for IPTV providers.

They claim that IPTV in general is legal… if you’re streaming properly licensed content/streams. Going as far as stating it’s hard to tell for the entirety of their channels. That sounds at best fishy to me.

My experience, you’re going to need threadfin or xteve to get iptv to mimic a tuner correctly, as well as you’re going to need to combine all your different guides together into one xml-tv-guide.xml. I ran into this when trying dizquetv / plutom3u / zap2xml etc, and decided to just run a second plex server in a docker container to only deal with the iptv source and guide data. I could play with it without disrupting my household this way.

correct I read this same stuff in several places online:

I really dislike the xteve / threadfin options I’ve seen so far. Seems like way too much of a PITA. I just was a straight forward integration

The developers have confirmed that the cited Medium article is just AI-generated fantasy.

There is no such thing as native IPTV support in Plex.
