Plex is adding new files as alternate versions of unrelated titles

Server Version#:1.69.1.3755-e00242c8

I’m trying to add some operas to my library, and instead of importing the file as it’s own title, it’s adding the file as an alternate version of a completely unrelated title.

For example, I’m trying to import:

  • Rosenkavalier, Der.2018 Met.[Fleming, Garanca, Morley].AAC.1080p.mkv
  • Walkure, Die.2007 Vienna.[Kaufmann, Stemme].720p.mp4
  • Elisir dAmore.2019 Madrid.[Adina Club version].480p.mp4

It will add these three titles (and more) as alternate versions of a title named
*Manon.1984 Met.[Freni, Pavarotti].480p.mp4

And it’s inconsistent. When I go into the Manon information tab and split them up, I can edit the names and information manually and it will stick. But when I try to add additional titles, they import as alternate versions of an existing title… and it seems to be random which title they import into and it’s a complete pain to search for it. I’ve tried changing the file names and scanning the library, but it does the same thing.

I’ve had Plex for years, and this just started happening yesterday. Please help!

It’s because of your naming.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/

You have to duplicate the exact naming the online sources use. I believe your first title should be…

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier (2018).mkv

If you want extra file info you have to name it like this

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier (2018) [Fleming, Garanca, Morley.AAC.1080p].mkv

The info in-between square brackets gets ignored by the scanner so mismatches don’t happen

Best to look up your movies here before you name them and add them to Plex
