Lately I noticed when I replaced some 720p versions of movies with 1080p versions, Plex did not put them together as usually as “duplicate” but it made a separate copy of the movie, complete with a different poster version. Why would it do that? So I had to go and manually delete the old copies.
Its probably because of your file structure. Did you have them in the same library or were they in separate libraries?
Same library, BUT they had different naming (but they were in the same folder)
It was a collection and previously I had renamed in chronological order like
- Movie 1 1972
- Movie 2 1976
Etc
The new copies just have the original names
Movie 1 1972
Movie 2 1976
Etc…
A couple of things, I would always make sure to use the proper plex naming scheme. Information on that can be found here → Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support. If that doesn’t work then I would go ahead and manually match the movies. That should take care of it.
