Plex is completely worthless to me and they won't respond, Good alternative?

Ok, so Plex reboots my Roku every time after about a minute into any show. All other streaming services like Youtube TV and Amazon Prime work fine. I’m completely up to date on my server updates. Both my Roku and my PC are connected by Ethernet to the same router. I’ve even tried different routers. I’ve written about this a few times before an no one from Plex has offered any solution or even answered.

So, Plex is worthless. What’s a good alternative? Anyone have a great replacement?

for the gazillion time… try Emby. activate the client stats in settings and upload the info cuz they cant help you out with a rant. just stating the obvious. i have 5 rokus and dont have a prob. if plex was worthless why buy it.

+1. All works fine for the rest of us. Must be a setting.

Great. Which one? I’ve changed nothing. Never messed with settings. Went from working to not working and the only entity that made any changes is Plex.

So again, Great, glad you figured it out! Which setting?

Obviously I haven’t messed with Settings as I don’t know what you’re talking about. “activate the client stats”, huh? What are client stats?

Thank you, finally after reporting this several times someone ( [Hitsville-UK] ) provided somethings useful. Thank you.

Hope you manage to get a resolution.

Well, I had hopes but the log files are empty since Plex Server doesn’t crash - it crashes the Roku. As stated before, nothing else crashes my Roku, just Plex. Plex used to work until a few months ago. I have made sure the Roku is up to date as well.

And no, I’m not the only one with this issue. If you search these forums there are several of us with this problem and I don’t see Plex Support responding to any of us.

Looks like I’m trying Emby…

Does it reboot the entire Roku or just restart the Plex app? It would still help if you provided the log from the Roku after it comes back on.

You might try deleting the roku plex app and reinstall it. Once in the past I had a problem with the roku plex app and that was the only solution that solved it.

I appreciate everyone’s help on this. First, I’d like to apologize. My tone and tenor were uncalled for. I lost my father last week and I was looking to lash out. This Plex/Roku problem for me has been an issue for a few months and I didn’t get a chance to address it properly although I (and others) have ask about it a few times previously with no resolution. A search will show that this issue has existed for a while for several of us.

I think I tried to do something comforting (watch a familiar and soothing show with memories) and it failed again and I lashed out. Sorry.

I see there are several responses for me to investigate which I have not yet done. One however needs a response - the one about posting the crash logs. Unfortunately I think I’m going to need to do further work on that. Plex Server itself doesn’t actually crash. I looked at the latest place for logs and the sub-directories are there but are empty. The reason I believe is that Plex doesn’t actually crash. Plex crashes the Roku. It reboots it completely. So, I’m going to have to think about that one.

Once again, I apologize for lashing out. I’ll get back to this shortly. Right now I need to work on some picture boards for the upcoming service.

Thanks for all the help and I’ll get this fixed with all your help.

Steve

Sorry for your loss. For the log, I meant the log from the Roku itself. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201377603-roku-logs/

Maybe you have corrupt roku software, try resetting it back to factory settings, reinstalling, if other people don’t have this problem maybe ur roku might be faulty. It might be overheating who knows.

I have waffled back and forth from using just Plex to using Emby and Plex to using just Emby. I had a great deal of trouble deciding which was best for me. I re[ported here much of my trepidations as I tried to decide where I would end up. It has been an arduous path and I was not sure what the best move for me was but now the decision has been finally made. I have moved to Emby completely.

I no longer have a Plex server at all I have even removed the Plex server from my Shield. I was using the Shield’s server for audiobooks as Emby has poor support for resume in audiobooks but recent changes either in the Shield or in the Plex server has rendered that advantage moot and I switched to simply using MediaMonkey on a computer for audiobooks. I no longer have any Plex server at all.

Emby, for me, is superior and is all I am using for my media.

Just to be complete I have to say that I have nothing really negative to say about Plex. It is just that Emby is much better for me than Plex.

Further to be complete I do not use any form of remote access at all and I cannot use the DVR functionality at all due to blocked signal to my location. I do not receive even one channel.

For me Emby has moved to the clearly superior position and I recommend that people use Emby over Plex unless there is something in Plex that is not in Emby that is absolutely needed.

Tiebierius, thanks for the suggestion. I followed the steps but unfortunately, this did not work for me. My shows from Plex still reboot my Roku after a minute or two. But I appreciate the help.

MovieFan.Plex, sorry for the delay. I’ve been dealing family issues. I’m having a bit of a problem with uploading Roku Logs. The instructions on the Plex page say to go to my Roku and select “Settings > Advanced > Logging > Remote” . The problem is that on my Roku 2XS there is no ‘Advanced’ under Settings. I have searched but can’t seem to figure out how to turn on Logging on this Roku. The Roku site isn’t any help as their support doesn’t address the older units.

I am attaching the Plex Logs from the latest incident. I got these from the Plex Web Interface under Manage>Troubleshooting. Hope this helps

Let me know what else I can provide.

Thanks.

toxlab, Apprecaite the suggestion. Tried this (delete Plex from Roku>rebooted Roku>Reinstalled Plex). Still have the same issue. Plex reboots my Roku after a minute or so. Thanks anyway.

Might be time for a Roku upgrade.

The best I could find is that your ROKU 2XS is low on memory, you would have to remove other apps(channels) to free up memory which this device doesn’t have a lot of.

Then I looked through the log and it says you are running Roku os 7.x so you probably aren’t running the latest Plex client which I don’t even know if that combination will work with the newer server versions.
