I have to say, after being a plex user for many years (lifetime plex pass), the last update for Plex on Roku is totally dreadful. Watchlist keeps favoring online services rather than my own files. Its slow. Please can I have the old one back !!!
Please Plex, go back to server tech, and not being a online streamer, its what you do best.
Yup, this is the last straw. First they made the mobile app look like garbage, now this horrible UI. They just convinced me to scrap Plex and move to Jellyfin. Goodbye Plex, been with you since the first day, now it is time to say goodbye.
The update in general is awful. My parents use a roku and up until this latest UI it was perfect. Now im getting complaints about playback errors and can’t navigate to find anything. What a headache.
A number of my friends have already moved to Jellyfin, Hopefully Plex will read this and reverse there actions, they are not a Streaming Broadcaster, but a media server program devloper. Else, I have wasted money on my plex pass.
Have you experienced Jellyfin’s clients yet? I’m just curious because they aren’t very good. I use Jellyfin as a Plex backup. Since I use primarily Apple devices, I have the luxury of using Infuse for my client (when I’m forced to use JF during an Internet outage). Otherwise, their native (and 3rd-party) clients are not great.
Did Plex hire a bunch of Apple engineers to design their new user interface for Roku? I just opened Plex on my Roku and this new user interface is horrible. It’s not at all user friendly, it’s slow, and clunky, I can’t customize my home screen like I used to. As a matter of fact, the new Home screen is laughable at best.
I want to see my content (Movies, TV shows, pictures, home movies, etc.) not the force feed, here’s “What’s on now”, Top Plex picks for this month, etc. I liked Plex for my content, not all of the we know what you want better than you do crap (a la Microsoft).
Next thing coming your way, forced ads every 5 minutes in your content. It’ll take me three hours to watch a 60 Minutes episode.
The new Roku plex app is horrible. It doesn’t work well, is not user friendly and makes it difficult to do anything with. Please revert it back to what it was before.
This is the worst app on roku. You went from my most used and most loved to now hated. There was no reason to completely rearrange the menus. It wasn’t broken and you certainly didn’t fix it.
I ended up switching to Emby. I don’t like the backend quite as much (mostly because I’ve been using Plex for a decade and I have to spend more time figuring out exactly where everything is) but everyone that streams from my server has said that they like the client even better than before Plex released this dog turd.
Not only is it visually superior I’ve had such a pleasant surprise with how much faster everything plays. It was a bitter pill to swallow having to pay for a different lifetime pass because I expected my Plex pass to actually be a lifetime pass. In the end, I recognized that this was the correct path for me because Emby is for self hosting media. Plex is now a self hosting media server veneer in order to pass off low grade streaming services.
It was already pretty bad when my family started asking why some of my movies suddenly had commercials in them when Plex started insinuating their streaming video into the search. I know I’m not the only one with less tech savvy individuals using their media server that don’t recognize the difference.
Now that I’ve switched to Emby I don’t have to worry about a bunch of low budget streaming rentals getting interspersed with my media. My friends and family know that when they search for something, they’re not going to get recommended to go watch an ad filled version when the same movie is already on my server.

But I have to add to what others are saying: THE ROKU PLAYER UPDATE IS DREADFUL.
I understand rearranging things, but REMOVING MAJOR FUNCTIONALITY? Seriously?
Where is the “continue watching” functionality? THIS IS WHAT I EXPECT FROM A PLAYER. The Roku player used to let me put that front and center, with mixed movies and TV shows, and things I recently added. Perfect!
Maybe I’m missing it (and if I am that in itself is a huge UX screwup), but now it looks like I have to REMEMBER what movie or TV show I was in the middle of, and MANUALLY FIND IT among all my other content. THIS IS ABSURD!
Plex, what are you doing! I’m a plex-pass holder and so far have been a fan. But if you make watching my own content THIS DIFFICULT, I’m going to drop you for Jellyfin etc.
Im surprised after starting this thread, there has been no official Plex response, so that tells me, 1) they are not reading this, or
there not interested
Action is certainly needed, or this will be a very empty community. As I doubt not many here are interested in there streaming channels or the fact that there injecting adverts into things into some of our own media.
I have just tried to contact Plex directly, and it would appear the only way possible is via billing, (Which I have done anyhow) otherwise they point you here. I dont like the way this is heading. almost talk to the hand stuff.
I cancelled my subscription and switched to Emby the next day… I was already pissed off over the iPhone app that was horrible. (I ended up loading a backup to fix that) I have Jellyfin running on a VM, but I like Emby better. I shut down down my Plex vm’s but I will keep them for a bit to see if they decide to fix the mess they made.
I would log out of the Roku Plex app and back in. I have my Continue Watching section, but I know in the iPhone I was missing it. I logged out and back in and then it was there again.
