Just an FYI. I received this message today when trying to access my PMS. As far everything else in my network, the internet is accessible, including the Synology NAS that PMS is running on. Login screen does come up after a refresh, but logging in never makes it through. Chrome , IE, or Edge all fail. Reset browser to defaults and cleared cache, same results. Reboot Sinology NAS. same results. “Sigh”. None of my device can gain access either.
_Plex is not reachable.
Make sure your server has an internet connection and any firewalls or other programs are set to allow access._
Did we have a service interruption? Eventually I was able to log back in. This is the second time in a month that this has occurred, at lease for me.
Same here, Why can’T we use our server without being connected to your servers? What’s the point behind this?
I usually visit https://status.plex.tv/ to see this type of information.
Yup, useless at least to me. It does say on April 18th around 22:30 the plex.tv login was down by 21%. If I am correct Plex.tv runs on AWS which in my experience has been more problematic than Azure.
I have worked with several companies, some state agencies, that dumped AWS for Azure and have exceed the five 9s in up time. I know that AWS maybe cheaper but you get what you pay for.
I’m having the same problem too. PMS just disappears for no reason and then will only come back after a PC reboot. Most annoying. My life would be pretty good nowadays if it wasn’t for worrying about PMS going away so often. Shame. It’s such a good app when it works!
Do any of you use Port Forwarding on your router? Or are you relying on uPnP to make the port and your server available?
Plex, regardless of the devices it runs on is a client/server application. That means for reliable up time you have to treat your PMS machine as a server within your network for 100% up time. That means a static IP to the PMS machine from your router and mapped ports opened for Plex to use to communicate.
uPnP is problematic at best and outright broken at worst. Different router manufacturer’s configure this service to clear unused ports depending on their research, and since Plex doesn’t send a keep alive on the port, the router drops it off after so long without activity. With Port Forwards, the router is ALWAYS listening, even if the PMS machine is off, down or otherwise not available. With uPnP that’s not always the case.
Here is a support document that talks about troubleshooting remote access: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138-Troubleshooting-Remote-Access
Skip the part of the document that talks about uPnP and NAT and go straight to the section on Manual Port Forwarding. 90% of people’s issues that I have helped with on these forums and others with remote access can be solved right there. The other 10% are due to network design or double-NAT or jumbo frames and a very few other possible problems. And the support document covers most of those as well.
If this solves the problems, make sure to stop back and reply it’s working, so if someone else sees this thread they can use your learning opportunity for themselves.
No I am not using uPnP. I have a UniFi USG‑PRO‑4 with port forwarding. My PMS server runs on a Synology DS3615xs with a bonded four port network adapter which is uplinked to a UniFi 48 Port PoE switch. Jumbo Frames is off.
I have both Verizon FiOS (100U/100D) and High Speed DSL (5U/15D) for failover. I do not use the vendor provided routers, with the exception of DSL. I patched directly into the ONT via CAT6a. All cabling is CATa shielded and tested by my DSX-5000 CableAnalyzer.
I have tested my failover and I can stream from my PMS to my mobile phone running on LTE without a hiccup.
I use my Server only for myself, I do not need the internet connectivity. I simply so not understand why i cannot use MY server when I do not get a connection to the plex servers sonewhere in the world.

Myself means, my Macmini is my server and client sometimes my iPad is the client…
Hi Mike G6.5. I have set up port forwarding so that I can share my Plex Server with my family. I am not an expert when it comes to server stuff like DHCHP TCP UDP etc … I got it to work a long time ago and I am scared to ‘tinker’. If you don’t mind just checking for me one step at a time to see if I have everything as it should. On my router under Port Forwarding I have set up a rule called Plex. Port Range 32400. Protocol TCP&UDP. IP Address 192.168.0.100. When I check my Server Mapping in Plex I’ve got a Private Address of 192.168.0.3 : 32400 and a Public Address of 77.96.32.252 : 28998. Is this OK? I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated. Forgive me if I don’t reply straight away as I have no way of knowing when you reply unless I log back on to the Forum again. Cheers
It doesn’t look quite right. Your port forward rule should be the same as the private address. You are supposed to tell the router where to send the data, if you send it to .100 and your server has the IP .3 - it will not get to where it should.
edit. And it doesn’t sound like you’ve specified the manual port entry in Plex if it says 28998. You need to tick the little checkbox to the left of the entry space for manual port.
OK. I used to do that, manually specifying a port but I couldn’t get any public access. I’ve just tried it again and the remote access now has an exclamation mark. This is where the technology gets me confused. I’m a very simple click and play sort of person and trust everything works. The private address is now 100.0.0.100:32400. the same as on the router, but there’s no public access. Any ideas?
… and now I have lost PMS. This happens every time I make any changes, like removing folders or adding volumes. Confused
I’ve just installed yet another new update and unticked the Manually specify public port and it’s all working again. even though the public address is back to 28998.
That’s because you’re using UPNP, it’s incredible unreliable and frustrating (besides the obvious security flaws). It might work for a while but it’s doomed to fail sooner or later again. For me, it seems as if you are doing something incorrectly in the router if your PC gets the same IP as you have been publicly assigned by your ISP. I’d advise you to re-read the manual for your router and try to figure out how to properly configure it. I’m positive there are others that have at least a similar router as yours so you could specify model here and ask for some assistance.
Cheers Peter. I am absolutely sure you are right! I’ll investigate further and see if I can come up with a solution. Ur advice is very welcome!
I deleted the old Port Forward Rule and created a new one. I now have a Private Address of 100.0.0.100 : 32400 and a Public one of 77.96.32.252 : 32400. It would appear that I have remote access. I’ll check with family members tomorrow to see if they can access my server. Do those settings look about right to you? Hopefully it will stop me losing PMS every time I make changes. Thanks for your help Peter
well i found a solution that works for me, staying back with 0.9.16.4 keeps my server alive, no loss of connections or anything.
the new versions have obviously has issues, so i downgraded and its working really well, please note im running my PMS on Server 2012 so it maybe a fix for server environments

I’m assuming that 100.0.0.100 is a made up address, since it’s a valid public IP address (belongs to Verizon). If not, you should consider switching to an RFC1918 IP address to avoid having issues reaching, or being reachable by, anything legitimately in that IP range.
Yes. It’s an address I made up initially so I could connect to a drobo which has the same address on my network. It worked so I’ve never changed it. I’m definitely no expert when it comes to networking so I’ve probably had it all set up wrong from the start. Thanks for your advice anyway
