Why is Plex showing advertisements? This is for .mkv files stored on my local system. I have a lifetime Plex pass.
Added: This, apparently, is only on my Roku. The videos show normally using the web browser version.

I don’t think I explained it well. Suddenly, up to 2 minutes of advertisements are showing. The first one is trying to sell me a Plex account. I do have an account and the Plex app is showing me as being logged in. I haven’t changed anything to cause this.
look it up in the forum. You basically played something from Plex servers and you didn’t realize it. There are long, angry threads about it, but it always turns out they weren’t playing a local copy.
I can imagine there may be long angry threads, but I don’t want to be angry. I only want a solution. As far as I know, I’m playing content from our local Plex server. The app is working normally with another program. I don’t know how to tell it to use our local Plex server. I haven’t found a setting for that.
Okay… When I start it from the television library, it runs normally. However, when I start it from the “Home” screen, shows advertisements. It must be going out to get the program from somewhere else, which triggers the ads. So, why are the two different parts of the Plex client getting their content form different locations? That seems weird, especially because it worked okay yesterday and every day before that.
If you have no interest in ad-supported content why don’t you just disable it in your Plex account settings? That will solve your issue lickety-split.
It’s because you have Plex’s stuff pinned on your home page.
Why? Well, I didn’t know there was a setting to disable ad-supported content. I looked for it since I saw your post and haven’t found it.
Why do think this started happening on season 17?
I don’t have anything pinned to my home page. We’re talking the Roku app. The web browser app is working as expected.
From the web app go to settings (wrench icon) then in the left panel click on Online Media Sources. Next in the right panel, set Movies & Shows to disabled then click the “Save Changes” button and you will not have this issue again.

Thanks so much! This took us by surprise. The first 16 seasons (of 24) worked okay. Then, suddenly, season 17 started showing obnoxious advertisements for no apparent reason. It’s illogical to pull content from the internet when it’s available from the next room.
I found the setting and changed it per your instructions. That sounds like it should solve the problem.
It’s possile that, starting from S17, they are available on Plex’s own streaming service. If you have “Movies and Shows” pinned to your left-hand menu ABOVE your own content, Plex will pick their own version when you play “Continue Watching” from the top Home row of your app.
We have begged and BEGGED Plex to never prioritize their ad-based content above anyone else that has the same content on any server, but they stay silent about it.
It’s possible you pulled up the listing for the show from the Plex Discover feature somehow, and started an episode from there, and it played it from the Plex Movies & Shows (ad-supported) content that way.
If you disable the Discover feature from the same Account settings page you went to before this can be avoided there. It will also remove the extra tabs from the top of the Home screen (find friends, activity, etc). If you change this setting the apps on smart TVs or streaming devices may not reflect it until you log out and back in on those clients.
