Soooo… a movie that has worked fine before, is 4k HDR and 7.1 surround sound. clearly the surround sound was always converted as I never had more then 2 channel audio, but I discovered recently when playing the video it is now getting the video stream converted… to 1080p too (does plex do 4k transcodes?). anyways… the player is the built in roku client to my tcl series 6 tv. It has always been the way I play hdr movies because windows is an awful place to play it. I made sure it is trying to play the stream as original. direct stream is auto, can’t force it because I need the audio to be transcoded.
Any idea where plex went full re(ohnoezwordphilters)?
Just tackled this now, found the issue. It wasn’t giving a reason for transcoding the video, only the audio, but I realized this 4k movie had been encoded in h264. You rarely hear about it but there is that setting front and center about the max h264 profile to support and sure enough it was 5.1 when the default is usually 4.1. I changed it to allow 5.1 and it stopped transcoding the video. Unfortunately the HDR part was not kicking in so I am going to scrap the file and re-obtain a proper h265 version. It is weird because I should have had this problem in the past so I have so many questions now, but I’m just going to cut this problematic encode.
