[BUG] Plex isn't picking up artist images (folder.jpg)

Server Version#: 1.15.1.791
Plex Media Server Logs_2019-03-13_23-57-12.zip (7.3 MB)

Plex is not using my local folder.jpg images. I have deleted and recreated my Music library, and Plex danced a few albums more than once. My server is a linux system, and I have ensured that file permissions are okay (I can manually use them in Plex metadata editing).

There are other reports of this, but they’re pretty old, and they appear to have been resolved, so I’m entering this as a new report.

Do you mean ‘album art’ or ‘artist’ pictures?

‘Artist’ pictures need to be named differently than folder.jpg

Music /
|--Albumartistname /
   | artist-poster.jpg <--- a photo of the artist
   | artist-background.jpg <--- a background/wallpaper particular to the artist
   |--Albumartistname - Albumtitle /
         cover.jpg <--- album cover
background.jpg <--- album background/wallpaper [if not present, inherited from the 'albumartist' level]
         1. Trackartist - Tracktitle.mp3
         1. Trackartist - Tracktitle.txt
         2. Trackartist - Tracktitle.mp3
         2. Trackartist - Tracktitle.lrc
         ...

I mean the artist image, and if folder.jpg is not supported, that’s an unwelcome change from previous behavior.

Okay, I’ve tried with the files named folder.jpg, poster.jpg, and artist-poster.jpg. Results were the same in every test. Most of the artist images that Plex finds are not the ones in the artist folders. The ones that are the same I suspect are coincidences.

My folder structure is:

|--Composername /
   | artist-poster.jpg
   |-- Albumtitle /
         cover.jpg
         01 - Tracktitle.mp3
         01 - Tracktitle.txt
         02 - Tracktitle.mp3
         02 - Tracktitle.lrc

My embedded tags are in good shape, so the folder names should not be important.

I’m seeing a lot of other mistakes in the scanning as well. For example, I have 4 albums of Tchaikovsky music. The embedded Composer (TCOM) and album artist (TPE2) tags for every track are “Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.” But Plex insists on creating two Album Artists, “Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky” (with 3 albums) and “Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky” (with one album). Other composers have similar problems. I have triple-checked the tags to make sure they are correct. The name “Peter” does not appear anywhere in embedded tags, file names, or folder names.

Is this a premium library?
Is the checkbox ‘use embedded metatags’ checked?
Is the LMA agent at the top?

The artist picture might be only used if the album artist doesn’t exist in the database yet.

It’s a Premium library.
‘Use embedded tags’ is checked.
LMA agent is at the top in all categories.

I have deleted the library, optimized database, cleaned bundles, and emptied trash on each attempt before recreating the library.
I have assured that the images are undamaged and usable. I can add them manually. There is no reason that Plex should not be able to add them automatically.

That doesn’t make sense. Is Plex looking for pictures before it creates database entries? I don’t get that.

This used to work. It isn’t working now.

I think this may be related to this issue:
Plex Music Metadata Issues

Has this been filed for investigation?

@OttoKerner Is this bug being investigated?

Here’s another example:

This shows the folder for composer Debussy. The folder contains identical files of the composer’s image with the filenames poster.jpg, artist-poster.jpg, and folder.jpg, and a folder for the album entitled “Rediscovered.” This is a linux system, so I included the permissions column as well.:

This shows the image that Plex chose to use for the artist. As you can see, it is not the same as the locally stored files. This image does not exist on my server, so it had to have been drawn from an online source.:

I have attached log files, which show that the Plex Media Scanner sees the artist-poster.jpg, poster.jpg, and folder.jpg files for this and every other artist in the library.

Checking the Edit Artist>Poster screen, it didn’t even add my local file to the choices:

Is this being investigated?

Plex Media (4.4 MB)

Is this being addressed? I recently returned to Plex after avoiding it for about 3 years because I found nothing but bugs with the media handling as well as other issues. And, running the very latest media server… I cannot add JPG graphic format picture files either as a URL upload or as a personal file selection. This is really stupid that JPG format files are not supported.

That sounds like a different problem. JPG is supported, so something else must be going on.

You might want to start a new thread to get better attention.

Ok, will open new thread, thanks.

Here’s another example. This shows the folder for the Russian composer Alexander Glazunov.

Now the image that Plex chose for the Artist Detail page:

And the Edit Poster page, showing that the locally-stored file was not even made available, even though it can be manually added:

Still wondering if this is being investigated. @OttoKerner

Still waiting for some indication that this problem is being investigated.

Here’s another example. In the following screenshot, you see a diacritic in the Artist’s name. Trouble is, this diacritic does not exist in the filename or embedded tags in any track of the album (as far as I can determine, it doesn’t belong in the name). So it can only be coming from an online source, probably Gracenote.

I’m looking into that issue on the Shield. Up until this report, it’s only been reported as an issue on the Shield. This is the first I’m hearing of this. Didn’t notice this thread before.

Any progress on this? Plex is completely making a hash of my audiobooks.

I made sure the LMA agent was tops for Audiobooks. It’s not messing up the organization now, but it still isn’t picking up local artwork.

I added three new albums to my library this weekend. One album was for a band that has never existed in my libraries before, one was for an existing artist, and one Various Artist album. This problem bit me again when Plex added the albums.

@anon18523487 What is the status of investigation on this problem?
