Plex keeps buffering on LG C9

Server Version#: Version 1.23.6.4881, also tried Version 1.21.1.3795
Player Version#: The latest one on LG webos (as of 11-08-2021), also tried XPlay

Hey guys, so for a month or two I’ve been having buffering issues on my LG tv, for all content (ranging from 1080p to 4k with dolby atmos). I’d been using it for over a year without a problem before that.

The buffering ranges from 10 seconds to a couple minutes, and doesn’t seem to be worse for higher quality content. Sometimes the player also bugs out and I have to restart it.
Things I’ve tried to fix it:

  • Re-installed the app on the TV and the server on my laptop multiple times
  • Tried different, older versions of the Plex server on my laptop
  • Disabled transcoding, turned it back on again
  • Tried Xplay instead of the official Plex player
  • Updated all the drivers on my laptop
  • Plugged an ethernet cable into my laptop
  • Checked that the internet was still working on my TV at the time of buffering (it was, I could play 4K netflix videos without any problems)
  • Checked the logs for ‘speed =>’, all the scores I could find were above 20

None of this worked, and I’m kind of at my wits end here, hoping you guys have any suggestions? I’ve been using Plex for years and in general have been very happy with it

Can you try changing your Routers 5GHz channel to a none DFS channel. LG Tv are apparently not good with DFS

Thanks for the suggestion, I didn’t know that and I’ll try I. I don’t have high hopes though, I’m quite sure it isn’t an wifi issue, I haven’t changed anything to my setup there. I also tried switching to 2.4ghz, still the same problem. On top of that, netflix, prime video etc. work fine without buffering, even 4K, so unless plex handles poor wifi worse than other streaming services the problem is probably somewhere else

Makes sense. I tried it, unfortunately it didn’t work.

In the end I did find the problem and a very hacky solution though, so just wanted to update for any people who might encounter this in the future:
Apparently what happens is that due to a windows 10 update my laptops internet connection gets very unreliable when I don’t use the laptop for a while. This means that the server will periodically disconnect from the internet, even with a wired connection. I have all my power settings set to never let the computer go to sleep, but that didn’t work. So what I did is just install an autoclicker that clicks at 1 minute intervals whenever I use plex, and that forces my laptop to stay awake. No buffering anymore! If anybody can think of a more elegant solution that would be great, but otherwise this will suffice.

I have very similar issues- the buffering is not related to the content type, and it only happens when playing back to my LG C9. I have guest account users accessing remotely WITH transcoding who never get the issue. I can be watching a 4K movie and sharing remotely without any buffering pauses, but have constant pauses on a sub 720p TV show. The next day it’s the other way round (although I have never found delivering multiple streams to cause buffering). My Windows media server (a Hades Canyon i7/16GB NUC ) is there only to run Plex. The logs never show any transcoding going on when the pauses happen.
