Plex keeps buffering with big internet bandwidth and new computer

Can you help me? My Plex server has been very buggy lately. I have used Plex regularly for 12 years.

The system will work after restarting Plex for about ten minutes of a movie, then all the movies will buffer and not play. This happens locally in the house network, and remotely at work. My internet is fast–Ookla said my download speed is 884 mbs and upload is 930 mbs. I will paste my latest error bug below (I cannot make sense of it). I have been internet sleuthing for a problem for weeks and have done everything I can (manually reinstall Plex, etc.). The metadata is weird with some of my shows too, and sometimes shows don’t have any info, even though they used to on my old system. The forums all mention Transcoding, but this seems to happen even when not transcoding (although perhaps I missing something).

A few months ago I upgraded from a 10 year old Mac mini (with an old Plex system and old OS) to a new Mac mini. My old system was super stable for over ten years and streamed consistently in three different homes (with a much smaller internet bandwidth), and I thought my computer upgrade, along with an internet bandwidth upgrade, would make my use of Plex better, but the opposite has happened.

Server: Plex: 1.25.6.5577 OSX: 11.6.1

This happens primarily on my Roku Ultra in the Plex house network, but also remotely on my MacBook and iPhone. With this new system, I was not able to do an internal system import, and instead had to load all 7 TB of data manually on this new computer. Perhaps I am missing something in the settings? Thank you in advance.

Not really helpful to your issue, but you’re not alone.

I have a dedicated HTPC and steam only on my local LAN. We have two TVs, each with a Roku 4 Ultra with the Plex app - one ROKU is wired and the other is wireless.

MY issue is when I attempt to skip ahead or back: buffer-buffer-buffer, press the ROKU button to skip back 30 seconds and then forward again will generally get the video actually playing.

This was NEVER an issue until a recent update, reminding me that you don’t update Plex unless you’re willing to accept some consequences.

Exactly! I wonder if it is an update that has made Plex so unstable for a lot of us. What OS are you using?

Is it possible to go back to an earlier version of Plex when this kind of thing happens?

Yes it is possible to roll back. Do you still have access to your old mac? If so it is possible by getting a older contents folder.

To replace the contents folder Shut Down Plex from menu bar Chevon. Navigate to Go menu top of Desktop, hold down the Option Key till you see Library . Enter Application support /Plex Media server/updates /Packages/PMS Zip/ Duplicate the zip and drag it to the desktop. Transfer to new computer. Expand Zip so you have a new Contents folder on the desktop.

Go to Applications Folder /Plex Media server/ Right click/show package contents/ swap out contents Folders.

Now start Plex. as safe guard keep old contents folder safe.

I will also at this point recommend not to upgrade to MacOS 12

The issue started some months ago with my Windows 10. I then did the UPGRADE to Windows 11 and have since done a format and fresh install of Windows 11.

Sadly, I didn’t keep track of what version of Plex introduced the problem.

I assume that the Plex installation versions will be on your MAC someplace. In Windows, there are at C:\Users\YOUR-PROFILE-NAME\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates

Somebody already replied with the information for your MAC. I’ll leave my info here for anybody else who might come across this post.

What type of Mac have you moved to? I have posted a few ‘fixes’ regarding migration to newer Macs.

I’ve had big issues lately and found it was being caused the downloads feature. It kept downloading the same files, and putting in requests for files it already had downloaded, causing the CPU to run all the time. Recently it was locking everyone, but those currently streaming, out of the server - making it appear offline when it wasn’t.

Downloads hasn’t always been an issue for me, so it might be a recent update via the apps that has broken it. As I reverted server versions and it was still happening!

Thanks for the reply. I have a 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core (8th Gen) Mac Mini on OS 11.6.1. Any ideas? The only way I was able to make Plex stable was to set up Apple Automator to automatically restart Plex every night at 4am. I would love a more permanent fix.
