Yup I am getting both issues too. Overlay popping up started 1-2 weeks ago. Crashing started last night.
Got the same issue here. Iām running the latest version of Plex Server on Linux Mint 18. Itās really annoying!
Just dropping by to say Iāve got the exact same issue.
The first (approximately) 20 minutes of playback goes without any issues, but after that, the subtitles goes of of sync and the controls keeps popping.
It started like a month ago for all media where I have the subtitles enabled.
Also, Iāve encountered crashes with ācould not transcodeā after a couple of minutes when the controls started popping.
In media without any subtitles it seems to be working fine.
Sorry for the newbie question, but how do we report this to the developers or at least get their attention? I canāt seem to find a way to report a bug other than to post in these forums.
I have the same problem for around two weeks. Last version of plex media server on Windows ā¦
We also noticed, as read somewhere else, that the subtitles gets more and more out of sync.
What we use as a work-around is changing streaming quality up or down. This resyncs the subtitles with the movie and the overlay issue is also gone for limited time again.

THANK YOU !
I thought I was going crazy, but this is the exact problem I am having !
I really hope the devs find a fix to this soon ![]()
At first I thought this had to do with the wireless reception. However testing the signal around the chromecast yielded a steady 20Mbps, which should be more than enough. Seeing others with the same issues gives me hope that we might be able to get a fix!
Im having this exact same problem, praying for a fix!
I also have the same problem as OP, really annoying! Sad, because I really like Plex and would like to keep using itā¦but I wonāt if this problem persists. Donāt have much to add for troubleshooting other that Iām using the Plex media server on Win 10, using the iOS app to cast to the Chromecast 1. gen.
We are now at 35 days without a solution.
At the moment, I canāt use PLEX+chromecast anymore. I just can watch 20 min. of a movie.
Same problem. Never used to happen. After about 30 mind into a programme - Chromecast controlled by Android app - the Plex time bar and programme cover image start popping up on the tv every few seconds covering the subtitles. Then after about 46 minutes playback will stop and just jump forward a second every 20 or so. Have to stop and restart. Think Iāll have to give up on Plex and go to back a laptop driving the tv.
Same problem here. TV shows with subtitles are become impossible to watch. Tried rebooting server, chromecast and wifi access point but no luck ,the problem persist. Please fix it!
Iāve been using plex for almost 4 years now, but if this problem wonāt be fixed soon i have to migrate to another platform
same problem in our house too
Plex should have a ticketing system so that users could file an official error. At least they should make an official statement on this bug. There are a many topics on this. Just when I payed for my lifetime subscription. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!! :(( >:) 8-X >-)

I experience the same problem. Many friends and family connect to my server using various devices and operating systems. Everyone with a (first generation) Chromecast is experiencing the appearing controls and playback halts. Playstation, NVIDIA SHIELD and Web playback is unaffected.
The relevant log file output during these issues is a repeat of these three lines
Oct 16, 2016 09:48:38.272 [4900] ERROR - Throttle: timed out trying to read chunk 65
Oct 16, 2016 09:49:01.841 [0584] ERROR - [Chromecast] [Subtitles] Request failed. [undefined] Count: 1
Oct 16, 2016 09:49:19.039 [2368] ERROR - handle_stream_read error 10053 An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine
Same here, hope to get a solution soon!
I think Iāve found a workaround. I had a older version of āchromecast.xmlā backed up on my server.
If you compare the old and the new file theyāve changed a lot in the file.
I did a test run yesterday with the old xml-file and it seemed to work. Iāve only tested it on my CC2 and not CC1.
Iāve renamed the extension to txt due to some upload issue.
