I recently bought a (Plex-recommended) Synology NAS for my movie and TV-show libraries. I’m new to NAS, but I think I got it right.
But, I’m having som issues with Plex. For starters the “update library automatically” feature doesn’t seem to be working anymore. No big issue, but annoying anyhow.
The real issue is that a couple of titles keep re-matching itself. Whenever I update my library the same titles changes the poster art and even the titles back to it’s “standard” version. See attached screen grab of the movies. I use the Swedish original title for “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest”, but it keeps changing it back to the English title. The same for “Y tu mama tambien” where I use the English title, and it changes back to the Spanish.
Poster art for “Mark of the Devil”, “Demons 2” and “Violent City” also changes back to the ones that Plex chooses when matching the titles.
I have noticed that too. Plex will rematch certain movies every single time it updates. Weird. Also, I think the update library automatically only works on local drives.
PMS only automatically detect changes for local (non-network) directories. This is a function of the kernel and its local devices. If you change, add, or delete anything from a remote share, it will not be detected until the next scan.
Regarding the re-updating, If PMS does not have a sufficiently valid confidence (approx 85% or better) it will attempt to seek a more positive confirmation. Things impacting this directly are: a) Metadata in the file (MP4 files) which confuse it. Specifically the Name and Title fields. b) Not following the proper naming and structure for the file itself.
PMS will properly handle UTF-8 (non-English) characters. The language of the library must be set as well as the system’s locale must be properly set so it knows how to interpret the characters. What is a ß in one language and part of the title might be something else entirely in another language. PMS must understand this to obtain the best & correct match.
PMS will always default to English as a language to detect with and use for metadata if no native-language metadata is available. As such, in these cases, UTF-8 encoding is assumed.
Once the match is made, and stable, then the metadata will ‘stick’.
So, yesterday Plex started updating my library, and when I woke up this morning it looks like it did a complete deep scan/rematching of all my titles. Restoring every single title to the Plex “standard”. All my custom titles and poster are gone, and my library is a mess. I’m looking at a couple of days work to get it all back the way I want it.
I’m always using the original movie title as displayed on IMDb when naming my files (both the folder and the file). I also replaced all the é, ä, ø and other diacritical marks with a simple e, a and o (updates to my library was done after this, keeping my custom settings, so this is not the cause of this resent update — I think).
My TV-series and music video/concert video sections of Plex are untouched, so it’s only my movies that are affected.
I’m seeing similar things. Its actually causing content to go missing from my Plex Home users since I do filtering based on “Ratings” and it changed some ratings on things that have been in my library for 4+ years. It’s also changing artwork and other minor things. Not appreciated!
