I am in the process of digitizing all my DVDs that I bought on a trip to Hungary.
I convert the movies to MP4 (keep the size down) and I label each movie with the title + year and move them to my plex server.
Plex goes and scans the library but instead of keeping the name in “Hungarian” for example (with all the accents) it goes and finds the “English” title instead.
It does download the description of the movie in Hungarian but for some reason it renames the movie on me.
I specified in my Library that’s is a Movie Library in “Hungarian” but that did not change anything. It almost looks like if it can find the English version of the movie in some online database it will use that… so it basically does a “translation” of the name in Hungary to English.
I tried to select the Country setting to Hungary but it’s not listed. I am not even sure if that’s going to make a difference. Any know how to fix that?
Did you change the library language setting AFTER you added those movies to Plex?
Please consider, this option will not automatically change the metadata language… it will only apply for new movies being added and movies being re-matched.
From your description it sounds like you just started this setup and want to apply the correct language to all those movies in the library. For that, I suggest 2 alternative scenarios:
create a new library with Magyar language right from the beginning and then re-add your movies folder to it
correct the settings of the library (in case you want to modify anything else), move the movies out of the movies folder (outside of the folders scanned by Plex), re-scan the library (this should empty everything), click clear cache / empty bundles in the library context menu, move the movies back to your folder and re-scan again
Alternatively you could manually “fix-match” the individual movies. In the related dialog, Plex will allow you to confirm the name, year, agent and language you want to use to match this movie. However that might be a little annoying as you have to manually do it for each movie.
Not sure about where you set the country… if you refer to the advanced settings of the library, this information is usually only used for localized extras such as trailers for individual countries.
I setup the library first correctly by specifying the Language option and adding the folder that contains the files.
Plex went through and started to index the files. It downloads the correct summary but it changed the title of the files (not the actual file name, just the title) to English.
I went back and edited the library again and went to advanced setting to see if I can change the “Language” but Hungarian is not supported / listed.
So the issue is that if the movie was released in English first and then dubbed into Hungarian it renames the title to English.
Hungarians are known for dubbing movies into Hungarian
If the movie is only available in Hungarian, let’s say a movie made in 1932 and it was originally released in Hungarian and no other language (meaning it was created in Hungary, starring Hungarian Actors) it keeps the title. However if let’s say it’s a move from 2007 and there is an English version it will rename the title to that English name. But the Summary is still in Hungarian.

I also deal with dubbed movies (in German) and they’re working all smoothly.
I have the files named according to the dubbed movie names and release years
library configured to use German language (I suppose that’s Magyar for you?? – in the German UI it’s showing all the languages in their own language… English, Francais, Deutsch, Magyar, Svenska…)
Does Plex behave this way for all your movies or just some?
When you say “it renames” the Hungarian name to the English title… do you mean it first displays the correct Hungarian name (alongside the descriptions) and then changes it back?
You could take a look at the agent logs of your server (Settings > Server > Help > Download Logs) if there’s any hint…

The first time plex detects a change in the folder it goes through the process of connecting online to download the information about the movie. It then changes the title of the movie from the original name I specified in Hungarian to an “English” name.
So for example the name of the movie is:
Winnetou és Old Sutherland a holtak völgyében
It then changes the title in the plex listing to: Winnetou and Shatterhand in the Valley of Death
But it still keeps the summary in Hungarian.
The strange thing of course is that we all know that Winnetou is a German co-production so instead of changing it to the german title of Winnetou und Shatterhand im Tal der Toten it chooses the English version.
In any case I don’t want plex to change the name of the movie as I have specified it on the disk.
I even went into the MP4’s properties and specified the title of the move in Hungarian (and also entered the year of the film) hoping it would use that instead of download and overwriting the movie title.
I will take a look at the logs later today and see if I can figure it out.
But is there anyway of just having plex not change the title of the movie while it checks against an online movie database?
As long as you use an agent linked to an online database such as The Movie Database, Plex will always use the official title from that database. It only keeps the file’s name for Personal Movies.
By the way… shouldn’t the title of this particular movie be “Winnetou és Old Shatterhand a Halál Völgyében” (hence Movies > Winnetou és Old Shatterhand a Halál Völgyében (1968) > Winnetou és Old Shatterhand a Halál Völgyében (1968).m4v)?
Plex will only consider embedded metadata if you have activated “Local Media Assets” in Settings > Server > Agents > Movies > ... and the library settings (library: Edit > Advanced > Use embedded metadata).
However… before we mix up tons of different topics and create even more confusion…
Can you fix the file name to match The Movie Database title and re-scan the library, wait 1-2 minutes and then get your logs and attach them here?
Here are the logs. I’ve removed the archived versions so these are the latest.
Also the movies are in the format as required by Plex.
Movies -> Name of Movie (year) -> Name of movie (year).extension
I do like the ability to get the poster and the summary as this seems to work 99% of the time correctly. For the posters that are not in Hungarian I upload my own so that’s ok.
finding no. 1: your Winnetou movies still have typos or minor misspellings (at least for “Winnetou és Old Sutherland a holtak völgyében (1968)”… something gives IMDB the creeps about the other movies of that bundle while I cannot see why as the names appear to be ok).
finding no. 2: I’m a bit confused as for what agent you are using for this library? Usually The Movie Database should play some role but it appears this agent isn’t touched/looked after at all (at least not in the few lines in the last log).
The default agent for a movie library is Plex Movie. And that one is primarily using IMDb data. However, it fetches non-english movie titles from TMDB.
So it depends on what is set in its preferences. Particularly ‘Localized Titles’
So the differences between what you have and what I have are as follows:
Localized tiles = off
Use red band = off
Include extras with subtitles in Library language = off
Country = Canada (no Hungarian/Magyar available)
Use collection info from the Movie Database = on
Prefer artwork based on library language = off
The Title field in the MP4 is the same as the file name.
It didn’t work. I just added a new movie to the library after it went through and did the existing movies again.
It found the English Title again and not the Hungarian title.

The same thing happens. The Title is changed to English but the summary is still in Hungarian.
It appears that it’s now working the way it’s supposed to.
The first movie I added after I re-added the library did not have the Hungarian Summary and Plex changed the name on it. But the second movie I added was perfectly fine. It keept the title and added the right summary.
