Hello, I’m still fairly new to PLEX and one of the main reasons I decided to go with PLEX for my media server is the robust cataloging and metadata gathering services. I have a question however, where exactly does PLEX Populate information from? I have one TV Series, The Expanse, which has not populated any information correctly. Now given I did rip it from my DVR and I suspect PLEX uses some type of service that requires things to have been released on a physical DVD to gather metadata, is that true? Also, I’m in the process of ripping my P90X DVDs, since they are neither TV Show or Movie, will they require the metadata to be entered manually? Or is it somewhere in the database already?
Thanks
Paul
It’s important that all media added to plex follows the naming and folder guidelines as described here - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/categories/200028098-Media-Preparation
You can get help from tools such as Filebot, http://www.filebot.net/ - if you need help doing it. Just remember that most renamers doesn’t follow Plex standards as default, so it’s best to double-check before renaming anything.
The scanner and agent(s) are responsible for going through and fetching metadata. You can alter this to fit your setup and also add custom 3rd party too - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200089656-Scanners-Agents
Workout videos and such is probably best to keep under their own “Home videos”, if you can’t find anything in the agents available. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200265246-Personal-Media-Movies
(I’m currently having issues reaching support.plex.tv, so the links might not work, I’ll edit them later in such case)
