PLEX LiveTV/DVR and Plex Pass

Hello All-

I am in the process of setting up PLEX + xTeVe + Channels…

I am setting this up for my kids that go to college and I was wondering if they each need a Plex Pass subscription to be able to use the Live TV and DVR functions of PLEX?

I am an original PLEX Pass member, have been using PLEX since like version 0.78 or there abouts, and I run the server on a MacStudio currently.

Once I get Channels DVR + xTeVe setup for PLEX will they be able to use their logins to watch Live TV and use the DVR functionality of PLEX or do I need to buy them each a Plex Pass? I am really hoping that since I am the Plex Pass member that my users are able to use this functionality on my server w/o having to purchase additional Plex Pass memberships.

Thanks in advance…

  1. If they are members of your ‘Plex Home’, they can see the LiveTV/DVR. Is not possible to ‘share’ the Live DVR (is not a library) as a friend. Look into ‘managed users’. I believe they use same password, but they can set individual “PIN’” for their users. If all is well, no need for a new plex pass.

  2. you will need a card with multiple tuners, one tuner can provide live tv to 1 user at a time, if you and (2?) kids want to watch at the same time, you need a card with at least 4 tuners (can be used as: 3 users + 1 recording at the same time; or 4 recordings at a time, or 2 live tv + 2 recordings at a time … etc) can be considered as a minimum (as an example ‘hauppauge quadhd’ was on the supported list I believe, but do your own research before buying)

Blockquote I believe they use same password, but they can set individual “PIN’”

That’s not correct, they can use their own login and password

I am using Channels DVR + xTeVe. When I set up xTeVe it asked about the number of streams - I put 5 in. I have no idea if this will work. It is getting the feed(s) from my DIRECTV account.

Right now I have everything setup and it all seems to work fine. Currently I am the only one that has been using it but it works really, really well. Pretty amazing, really.

I am going to add one of my kids as a home user and have them try it out on their end. They are at college and that’s what really got me started down this path. She doesn’t watch much live TV and this seemed like a great solution for the very few times she wanted to watch something live versus paying for a cable subscription.
