Plex TV DVR - quick question

Server Version#:latest version server software
Player Version#:latest ios iphone device

As a Plexpass user I’m able to stream tv streams remotely from my home server (using HomerunHD) on my ios device at my work.

My dad is a user I’m sharing server content with, and although he can view content from my server I’m unable to get TV streaming on his ios device working when i visit (he uses Chromecast to extend to his TV).

Is this feature only available to the “owner” of the server, or perhaps you require Plexpass membership to view streaming TV remotely?

Thanks for any info you can provide

Mark.

Live TV streaming requires a Plexpass membership.

So to be clear - If I buy my dad a Plexpass he will be able to view TV streams from my server?

No, you need the Plex pass on your server then add users to the users list on PMS then you can stream TV to your Dad.
I have it set up this way, I stream TV to 6 remote users not at any one time though.
My server has 3 WinTV DualHD tuners, so we can stream and record multiple TV channels at the same time.

Hope this helps?

Hi,

I’ve literally just been experimenting with this. I have Plex Pass on my server and I’m using HDHomerun as my tuner. If I log in as my Plex admin account I can see Live TV from local and remote devices. However, if I login as a Home User and select something other than my admin account, or as a Shared user (a user with their own Plex Account) I cannot see Live TV… How have you configured your system to get this to work?

Plex pass allows you to set up managed users with a 4 digit code and then you can select what you want to share with each user including TV which is in the restrictions side of sharing for some reason. Hope this helps?
But to be clear, the server needs the Plex pass, remote users then remote in with your username and password then select their account from the users list.

Thanks, I didn’t check restrictions. This works for Home Users but not for Sharing.
WRT to the requirement for Plex Pass on the server, the OP and I have both stated that we’re already streaming live TV. and that we have Plex Pass. I believe it’s impossible to do this without Plex Pass on the server so I don’t understand why you keep making this point

@andrewjohnhunt My apologies, but I originally read your post as your Dad needed it for the player? You only need one account with Plex pass then just log each user into the account with the pass. I do like the live TV, but there’s a big change happening around July 1st, EPG is Channing

Look again mw0dcmplex - I’m not the original poster so it’s not MY Dad

Sorry, being sight impaired, does have its downsides. Plex also had its downsides, but thankfully not to many

Hi all. It seems counter-intuitive to give shared users access to your server using your own admin username/password. It just doesn’t seem secure. I was hoping it would be an option like sharing specific libraries with specific users. They have their own Plex username/passwords but I grant them the rights to stream from my HDHomerun in the “Sharing” area under their profile names. I do have a Lifetime PLexPass btw - and you are correct - it does work from my own profile.

Sharing live TV with ‘friends’-type users is not supported in Plex.
Only users in your Plex Home can have live TV.

I agree, this is how I got my last account deleted thanks to a remote user getting upset because their wife and my girlfriend has fallen out. The shared section could do with updating to combat this. On the other hand, now there’s 2 users are out of the picture and I’m a Lifetime pass user, my only remote users are my Dad, girlfriend and kids, oh and my ex wife… Surprising how we get on better now…

EPG is coming along, looking forward to seeing how the complicated UK OTA DTT EPG data is split over each region and then sub region. I’m toying with the idea of adding one more WinTV DualHD tuner to give me 8 Tuners, plus use my RTL dongle to give 9, this will effectively give me enough if theoretically all 6 users are watching different TV channels, but thankfully only have 3 users that use it all the time with the family at home using it to, but I have come close to the 6 limit a few times, especially recording at the same time 3 different films at the same time as 2 users are using it to watch cartoons :grinning:
My next feat is adding 4x4Tb hard drives, then a 6Tb, which with my current 2x2Tb, 1x1Tb and a 3Tb NAS will give me enough to make Plex at home the system I wanted it to be to start with.
But live TV could do with a few more bells and whistles, but get the new EPG provider working firstly and then we’re cooking on gas

Sorry for my long winded reply, just woke by my 6 month old daughter, and I’m on feeding duty… The things we do for kids etc!
