Plex losing subtitles when Automatically Adjust Quality is enabled in Plex Web

I still have the issue with newest Media Server using Chrome Web App. It seems to happen when “Automatically adjust quality (Beta)” is enabled in Quality.

I have attached a client log from when the subs stopped playing.

Plex Client Log.txt (64.8 KB)

will have a look but for such issues would need both the server and client logs and may also need sample media file(s) that produces the issue

can’t really do much without the corresponding server debug logs as well (and indication as to what time the subs dropped)

I will clear the server logs later when i am back home and try to reproduce it so i can provide both client and server log(s).

Here is a new zip with both client log, server log and Media Info.

After starting the playback i skipped to around 5:00. The subs stopped playing at 5:55.
Subs_Debug.zip (59.5 KB)

This happened at Original quality streaming over LAN. This does not happen to any other device / app (tv, mobile) only when streaming to Web App (i am only using Chrome).

Thanks - the client log file is zero length. But i will try and reproduce the issue if you can get me the first 10 minutes of the media file
"E:\Serier (Udenlandske)\Game of Thrones\Season 05\Game.of.Thrones.S05E04.720p.HDTV.x264-0SEC.mkv"
Use tools such as mkvtoolnix to get the first 10 minutes. Please upload to dropbox or similar service and send me link by private message

Thanks

Thanks for the 10 minute clip and logs. I have reproduced the issue with a WAN connection and the automatic adjust quality option used.

I found that the subtitles appear if i skip forward a bit

I will discuss this the development teams and raise an issue if it is not already being worked on

Does the problem only arise with some videos ?

I found that the first subtitle text in the srt is timed to start at 3 minutes 11 seconds into the video. So this long gap at the front is probably a factor

I did a test with editing the subtitle (making a second srt and editing that) and i changed the first few subtitle text entries to display near the beginning and the problem went away.

So it looks like to do with time period before first subtitle text is to appear.

Do you have any evidence of the issue when the srt file has text that displays in first minute or so?

It sounds like a likely reason, since i experience it alot with series that has a “recap” at the beginning which is often not translated. Even though i have a hard time figuring out why that would affect the subtitles, since they usually play fine for a few minutes, and as long everything has a valid timestamp i should work.

I do not have any evidence at the moment (not that i’m aware of since i did not think that could be the reason), but i will try to be aware of it. Nomatter what, it works fine on all other apps i tested, it’s only the HTML player with Automatic subtitles that triggers it.

There appears to be a bug that arises when the automatic bandwidth adjustment happens before the first subtitle text is reached and of course the longer delay in the subtitle the higher the likelihood of bandwidth adjustment getting invoked

I will refer this bug to the development team

I have now referred the bug to the server team to fix.

As this is a specific bug relating to Automatic Bandwidth Adjustment and delayed subtitle text, I am going to move the related forum posts into a new topic as this is very old and covers a lot of old issues that were fixed a long time ago

There will be a link here to the new topic when i create it

@MediaBaby I created this topic for your issue - moving all the posts here from Plex losing subtitle while playing

Cheers, i experienced the issue today again after having disabled “Automatic Adjust Quality” so it does not seem to only happen with that feature enabled, but under same circumstances with a subtitle file with a gab at the beginning.

I cannot reproduce that with the provided clip, With auto adjust quality disabled the subtitles do start at offset of 3 minutes 11 seconds

If you have debug logs of the problem and clip to reproduce the problem I will look into it. Do subtitles drop out or not show up at all? And do they all fail ?

Same thing. It plays for a short while then disappears. Changing quality or skipping sometimes makes them reappear just to disappear again after a short while.

I will try to see if i can reproduce it and make a sample.

Yup, same thing happening to me, and only appear after i skip or change quality, for a few minutes and then disappear again.

At the moment the only issue I raised with development is the following

  • Automatic Quality enabled in the Plex client app
  • The subtitle text does not start immediately and there is a long period before it starts

If there are any other circumstances when the subtitles are lost, I need debug logs, from server and client app and sample to recreate the issue

I am having the same issue as well.

Same issue :frowning:
