Plex for Windows turns off subtitles repeatedly

Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#: 1.58.1.3380-ea159c52

Any time I’m watching a title with subtitles, Plex turns them off every 15-20 minutes or so. I have to turn them back on manually but they just get turned off again. Anyone else experiencing this?

+1. A user reached out to me this morning complaining of exactly this issue. I have also duplicated the issue with Windows client build 1.58.1.3380-ea159c52. Up until this report subtitles have been working fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Perhaps rolling back to an older build? Or, is there an in-development feature that is causing it? Can it be disabled? etc…

I’m seeing the same thing with the latest Windows app. When I try to turn them back on, I kicked out of what I’m watching with an error and have to resume playing.

Wow, I haven’t seen that. Sounds like you have it even worse than I do!

I can verify that 1.56.2.3345-2a4c0924 does not have the issue.

Blocking auto-update is the next challenge, at least for the less sophisticated end users.

Yeah, I suppose rolling back isn’t going to do much good if Plex just overwrites it. But thank you for the link!

Well dang, son, you’re a rockstar! Thanks for that!

I hate to say it, but 1.56.2.3345-2a4c0924 just turned my subtitles ON after I turned them off.

Same issue after I got auto updated this is really annoying

I am also seeing this on the Plex for Mac Version 1.59.1.3398-dab42972 client, except mine turns off after about a minute every time! I turn them back on, then about a minute later it turns them off again. Help gratefully received!

Someone mentioned “closed caption settings” on this Reddit post from a while back… is that even relevant? Does anyone know what they are referring to and whether it’s even relevant for Mac?

Hi @cuban_pete_1 , hitting the same issue for the subtitles, and I checked the reddit post, but after checking settings in Plex for a bit, my conclusion is that these “close captions settings” are settings from their tv, and not from the Plex app.

@cbou65, most people in this thread, myself included, are seeing this issue with the Windows app, not on a TV. I installed an older version of the Windows app and the issue went away. It’s pretty clear it’s a problem with the app.

@garyft ok, thanks for letting me know, my bad. I experience some similar issue on the pex web player, meaning the subs will disappear after a couple of minutes. Maybe I’ll check for a thread specific to this web player issue.

I have had this problem for more than 2 years. I always update to the latest version of the WIN player when notified.
I have fixed all my files to SRT external subtitles only, but I still have this issue.
If this is not resolved very soon I will be testing out Emby and cancelling my plex subscription.

I have some files that will straight up not play with subtitles on Plex for Windows (errors), others which continuously deselect subtitles, and other times where it plays a subtitle other than the one selected and isn’t fixed until restarting the app.

Happy to provide logs for any of the above scenarios as these issues have become frustrating.

Note that this issue also occurs on the Linux version (both installed from snap or flatpak) of the desktop app.

It appears not to matter how far I roll back my desktop app. 1.56.2.3345-2a4c0924 was supposed to address it, but it did not. Going back build by build, i have yet to find one that doesn’t exhibit these subtitle issues

Extremely annoying issue that breaks the experience for me and it exists for such a long time already.
I wish this would be looked at by the support.

I also have this issue but its random. Sometimes it happens multiple times a day and sometimes it doesnt happen for 3 months. Its incredibly frustrating. Currently running Version 1.60.1.3413-533a7645.
