Plex media all showing air date of 1900-01-01

I’ve been seeing this issue over the past few months and am just now digging into it. Newly-added TV shows are frequently showing an air date of 1900-01-01 and I’m unsure of how to troubleshoot the issue. This issue was apparently a problem back in 2020 and then resolved, and I’m not finding any more hits on search for a matching problem.

Here’s the details:

  • Running PMS Version 1.26.0.5715 on ubuntu 20.04
  • Only seems to impact TV shows, movies scan as expected
  • Does not impact all TV series
  • TV scanner is now set to “Plex Series Scanner”. Previously was “Plex TV Series”.
  • I’ve run a “Refresh all metadata” task against the TV library. That nuked a huge amount of my thumbnails and left me with something of a mess. It also didn’t resolve the date problem.

Any thoughts as to how I can troubleshoot this issue?

Update to PMS 1.26.1

Allright, I’ve done the following:

  • Downloaded and installed plexmediaserver_1.26.1.5772-872b93b91_amd64.deb
  • Run “Refresh all metadata” on the “TV” library. No change in dates.
  • Run “Match…” on an individual impacted TV series. No change in dates.
  • Delete an entire TV series, then add the files back, then “Scan library files” on the TV library. Dates on impacted series are still 1900-01-01

This is the old scanner/agent which is deprecated and probably won’t receive any bugfixes.
Don’t use it. Switching this in a library which was created with the newer agent will very likely lead to malfunctions.

Allright, under TV Shows > Manage Library > Edit > Advanced I’ve selected the scanner “Plex TV Series”. When I click “Save Changes”, I’ve met with the response “Your changes could not be saved.” Nothing is showing as running in Activity.

edit: Someone on reddit suggested changing to another scanner first, saving, then going to Plex TV Series which has allowed me to save the change. Currently refreshing metadata across the library. First glance is that the dates are still messed up but I’ll report back when the process completes.

OK more stuff:

  • Post metadata update after switching scanner, dates still wrong on some series.
  • Ran “Optimize Database”
  • Ran “Clean Bundles”

Some of the series I had identified now get the right dates. Some don’t, however, I am now able to go to those series and manually “Fix Match” and “Refresh Metadata” and it seems I am finally getting the correct dates. This is going to take a while to wade through the mess but at least the process appears to be working.

edit: forgot to add, thanks @OttoKerner! I appreciate all the input and it eventually led me to resolution.
