So I am new to plex and so far love it! I'm not sure where this post should go so I put it to the General Chat consortium. I've been playing around with it for a while on my ubuntu HTPC/Server and am wondering if I can use it as NAS for documents. Basically I want to be able to access documents (word/pdf/excell...) on various devices and edit/view them then have them save back to the HTPC. Can this be done with plex, how would it be done, and if not any suggestions for alternatives. I admit freely that I am an ignoramus when it comes to networking and linux so simple is best for this simpleton. :D
I want the exact same thing (being able to share my docs, pdf/docx/xls etc). Can't be to hard to implement right?
How about a build-in FTP server in Plex? Prefferably one you can turn on and off from Plexdesk
Not everything is hard to do (and that is not saying that doing this is easy), but given there are still years of dev work planned implementing "media related" features, it is not worth holding your breath to ever see anything like this happen. If you want an ftp server just install one, there are heaps of them already.
What I did to store a large file in Plex and transfer across any computer was I created a folder within my Plex Library for the file and compressed the folder. I then added a video file extension to the end of the zip file (test folder.zip.mp4). Plex was then able to scan the file into the Library and I was able to download the file remove the .mp4 extension addition and then decompress the file. rom there I was able to open the file without error.
Hope this helps.
