Plex Media Center + Plex Media Server in a setup like XBMCbuntu

Hi Everybody,

I new in Plex Forum, but I know Plex and I'm testing it for some time.

There are a lot of plataforms where Plex Media Center runs, but I'm looking for a specific setup: a dedicated media center based on Intel / ION architecture.

There is no problem with Plex Media Server: it works very well in a Linux plataform (like Ubuntu 12.04), performing transcoding as well, even asking a Core2Duo processor to do it.

I'm having problems with Plex Media Center. I'm trying to develop something like XBMCbuntu, wich has a custom Ubuntu designed to run XBMC, turning the computer into a dedicated Media Center. But, with Ubuntu, one can install other apps, like file servers, torrent servers, etc. I've tested with some success an instalation of Plex Media Server in XBMCbuntu, and using thea addon of XBMC to play media on the same device. But, this is not an "elegant" solution. Once "Plex is XBMC", I believe there is a way turn Plex Media Center into the main interface, and making this device a server/player of the home network.

Summarising the idea, the system should attend the following topics:

- Based on Intel / ION / ION2 (or AMD)

- Run a very light Ubuntu

- Run the Plex Media Server and provide media to the network, with transcoding.

- Run Plex Media Center

- Run a File Server to several devices (Windows, MAC, Linux, Android, iOS, etc...)

Some solutions I thought:

- Run everything on Windows (it implies in licencing, tweaking, and lose of performance)

- Run a VMWare ESXi with Ubuntu Server + PMS and Windows (tweaked) + PMC (crazy solution)

- Give up this idea (until an official release for linux), and assemble 2 machines.

OBS:

- I've tryed the new Plex Home Theather, but with no success, and this is a development.

- I'm runnig the unofficial port for Raspberry PI, but it still has some issues.

Thank you!

I will suggest you go to raspbmc. Plex is not design to be both the server and the client. Unless you consider plex/web. Rasplex is nice and all but the client/server architecture remains.

Thanks, Breezytm. I've tested raspbmc, with great success. It is in my list as a possible solution.

My intentions with Plex goes beyound of having a simple storage and a media center.
I'm thinking about a complete "ecosystem", based in a linux server in my living room and, once it is in my living room, it must be able to play their own stored media and stream to others.
But it is important for me if I have a "consistence" about the solution, I mean, the same software and the same "face" across all plataforms and systems.
The last step for this is Plex Media Center running on linux.

I see what you are saying. For months now i've been running both plex and xbmc(raspbmc). It's really not much of an issue at all. All you need is the trakt.tv plugin and addon to keep both libraries consistent.

I decided to go that route because to my opinion xbmc is much stable. It has been around for decades. It has features that plex doesn't have yet. Plex in the other hand is getting there and is getting there fast. The plex dev is doing such a great job. But for now i would rather keep my raspbmc for my house and plex for when i am on the go. This solution works great for me.

Very nice!

Thanks for your response.

Let's see what will come... I'm still confident about na oficial release of PMC for Linux
