Plex Media Player for Linux -- couple of quick questions?

I’m running my plex media server on fedora 64bit and have been for years after moving away from ubuntu and typically watch about 90% of my content using roku devices.

However, sometimes I do watch via my PC and have been using browsers and webui client via https://app.plex.tv/desktop (again via my fedora PC). This generally works well but I do see a good bit of hw transcoding (as I’m using a browser).

I’ve seen folks in the past reference Plex Media Player for Linux but never bothered looking into it to much until yesterday. I have the rpmfusion.org repro added and when I do a sudo dnf search plex-media-player I can see 2.49.0-1.fc31 listed.

First question: Does this version above functionally match the 2.49 version for windows and mac from -> Plex Media Player or is it some downgraded version ?

Second question: After I installed the above version is works pretty well (from what I can see) but when I check its version via settings - plex media player the version is reported as 3.104.2, is that normal ? I was expecting to see 2.49 as the version.

Third question: I also notice within the rpmfusion.org repro a package called plex-media-player-session but I cannot find any information on what it is ? Would anyone know ?

Fourth (and last) question: I also use another repro to get more up to date nvidia drivers called negativo17.org and within their repro I see they also have a version of plex media server but its a later version 2.50.0.1045-1.fc31 -> https://negativo17.org/repos/multimedia/fedora-31/x86_64/plex-media-player-2.50.0.1045-1.fc31.x86_64.rpm. Anyone have any details on this, maybe the answer to question one will answer this one.

Thanks in advance.

I was able to get answers to my questions which I’m going to post here in case its of any use to anyone else in the future …

First question: As far as I can tell yes they match. The plex-media-player found on rpmfusion.org and negativo17.org are linux compiled versions of the ones initially release here.

Second question: So this one had be confused. Version 2.49 references the version release of the plex-media-player itself but 3.104.2 is the Plex Web version (desktop) bundled within the plex-media-player. Version 3.104.2 was extremely old in the 2.49 version and was refreshed with version 2.51 to 4.24.1.

Third question: plex-media-player-session is an add-on to the plex-media-player package allows you to start the Plex Media Player in TV mode at boot for HTPC installations.

Fourth question: negativo17 is just another repo which has a compiled version of the player for linux.

I would love to get PMP as a native Linux desktop app.
The rpmfusion one did not work for me on Fedora 30.
I’ve since been forced to move to Ubuntu so now need roll my own all over.

Strange did not work for you as it pretty much worked out of the box for me. Albeit I’m on fedora 31 now so maybe any past problems have been ironed out.

I’ve been using a browser for years on my desktop pc, its fairly powerful so I did not really care about it transcoding. I’d never looked into a native app to play plex as I’d heard rumours it was bad. But to be honest version 2.51 with desktop 4.24.1 is impressive and everything is direct play that I’ve used so far.

Pity PMP is coming to EOL, I feel I’ve missed out now all these years !
