Plex Media Player packages for Linux

To clarify further, they have no idea when or even if there will be a Plex for Linux. So, if you were building PMP on Linux (like me) or using knapsu’s prebuilt packages you are just going to be left unsupported for an indeterminate amount of time (maybe forever). My entire set up has just been abandoned by Plex. Guess I didn’t matter enough to their bottom line.

What about a Linux version?
Right now, we’re focusing our resources on macOS and Windows to ensure they receive the best experience they can. It’s certainly possible that we could expand to support Linux in the future, but for now it’ll be Windows and macOS.

Except they aren’t, see my excerpt from their blog post.

Is there an emby client on Linux? I have been using knapsu’s solution for ages and it’s been flawless, what a legend.

There is Emby Theater but its still pre-release for Linux

Hi @StanleyHsu. This is the first time I see such issue. Unfortunately I don’t own Intel UHD Graphics card that I could try to reproduce the issue and find out what is going on.

If possible I guess you could compile Plex Media Player yourself and run it to know if this is Plex application bug or AppImage package bug. I would not suspect this to be a driver problem as previous releases worked like you mentioned.

We’d much rather invest the effort on a cross-platform app with a best-in-class player engine under the hood, so as of today we’re taking our Windows app out of the store.

An application for only Windows and Mac are not truly cross-platform unless you also make it for Linux. If the application was truly cross-platform it would be no issue to support Linux in addition to Windows and Mac.

Maybe we need to cancel our Plex subscriptions for Plex to give us Plex for Linux. Though I fear we are not many enough to pull it off.

i ws under the impression that pmp was to be discontinued, but it’s sounding more like pms is being discontinued if that’s the case emby just gained a permanent new user.

I wish users would read things properly! PMS and PMP aren’t going anywhere, they’re just changing the UI of PMP, not scrapping anything. The HTPC UI will be going away, and we’ll be using the same UI as the PMS or similar, something called Uno??
Someone from Plex like @sixones or @jesusmc correct me if I’m wrong? Or @sa2000

Isn’t it interesting how they can’t manage to release a Linux client, but knapsu seems to be able to build from their own source in a manner packaged for all Linux distros? I was using knapsu’s appimage too until I decided to set up my own build environment and compile PMP myself. It was working great, but now the rug is being pulled out from under me.

PMS isn’t going anywhere.

PMP is being EOL’d in Jan 2020 exactly as the blog says. PMP has two modes: TV and desktop. TV mode is used by HTPC folks so they are directly impacted.

There are two new player apps for the desktop: one for Windows and one for Mac. Neither have TV mode and they do not readily support HTPC scenarios. Most of the keyboard navigation and various audio/video settings are not available in the new players.

UNO is a user interface style or layout. PMP has had UNO for awhile as have many other client platforms (Roku, Apple TV, some smart TVs, etc).

Both new player apps have the UNO frontend are are using mpv for the backend for full video playback support.

@darcilicious That’s virtually what I meant, maybe I should’ve worded it better, but even on my HTPC and various devices, I’ve never used the TV mode as it just isn’t the best way of navigating around Plex, I’ve always used the desktop version, and I’ll be sticking to the desktop view.
I’m hoping to get a few Android TV devices to go around the home in the near future, which I know will be subject to Uno etc, I use the Android PMP on 2 tablets and phones here also, just wish they would improve the live TV guide and get the TV working better before they mess with other things?

This is about more than just the viewing mode. There are settings available in PMP that are not likely to be incorporated in the new apps (buffer and audio passthrough come to mind).

Plex Media Player has always been a computer-only program and as such was never on mobile apps; those are separate apps that have nothing to do with PMP or the new desktop apps.

As a Plex Pass lifetime subscriber I must say I am a bit flustered by the whole Linux not supported issue. Everyday more and more people are switching to Linux for one reason or another and I also just made the switch and finally have Linux Mint setup just the way I like it and there is still no official Linux support? Don’t even get me started on the Sonos integration with Plex that to this day doesn’t work and I haven’t even started to try the OTA TV /DVR project yet as all I read is that it is not working all that well for most folks… Why did I get the Plex Pass lifetime for again??? :frowning:

Can’t Plex just hire Knapsu (for a very hefty salary of course) and he and his team can have it up and running on Linux in a day?

What’s even more impressive is that knapsu has used Travis to automate the build process as soon as Plex push new code to their GitHub repos master branch, so he doesn’t even have to do anything to release a new Linux build.

The thing that’s getting most Linux users up in arms is articles like this one that says it’s just going to be available for Mac and Windows which covers the vast majority of users!! - https://ausdroid.net/2019/08/17/plex-goes-all-in-with-desktop-platforms-while-killing-home-theatre-setups/

I agree that Knapsu and the guys are doing a sterling job and once my Linux powered PMS is back up and running, I’ll be back on board testing the beta!!!

IS there an install guide somewhere to get this installed and have Plex start up for Wife Approval?

IE I want it like PMP Embedded but that doesnt work on the new Intel NUCs due to old kernels.
So want to give this a try, but just wondering where/how to start to get it running like embedded, is this possible?

Late to the game here, but great looking app so. My only complaint is not being able to multiple instances. Maybe there’s a way i don’t know?

I created a new discussion for the abandonment of PMP for Linux.

So can we leave this for packaging of PMP (for as long as that might live).

would this package work on raspberrypi and other arm computers? im running the stock raspbian os right now

Would installing Libreelec and then this be equivalent to pmp embedded? I’ve got a large group of family and friends using plex servers all with raspberry pi’s and dumb tvs and as the pi4 isn’t supported it’s a bit of a pain.
