Plex Media Player vs. Plex for Mac and Windows?

Hi,

I don’t really get the difference between those 2. What should I use?

In your blog post you write that “Plex for Mac and Windows” is the new one and “Plex Media Player” is phasing out, but now there is a new 3.0 Beta for Plex Media Player?

I am confused

What programm should I use for my remote Windows PC?

We were originally going to stop support PMP, but after users complained, this decision was changed and PMP will be still be supported. PMP may not get all the newest features, but fixes will still be made if there are broken things.

If your PC is connected directly to your TV or to an AVR then you want Plex Media Player (in tv mode most likely). If you’re just watching on your desktop or laptop the use the new player.

So, to be clear, Plex app will be the new and “better”/forward-looking version. Plex Media Player app is on legacy support. Correct?

I just saw the 2 pinned topics and was confused as hell.

Do I need to manually update the forum preview release of the Plex app or will I get an automatic notification when it goes proper?

“Better” depends on your needs. Plex app will never have all the HTPC like features that PMP in TV mode has.

Probably this but if not, manually updating isn’t hard.

PMP and Plex Player will get auto updates as they are available. You’ll be prompted to install, or not, or when.
