PMP Version#: 2.48.0
Plex for Windows/MacOS Version#: 1.4.1
What’s the difference between Plex Media Player, and Plex for Windows and MacOS? They’re not the same product, but they’re both desktop players? When do I choose to use one over the other?
PMP doesn’t seem to feature on the main Downloads page.
No, it does not - for some reason - but you know where to find it.
If you don’t need TV View, or any of the other “Enhanced” Features of PMP, The new Player is probably good enough. If you find those “Enhanced” features necessary (only available for setting in PMP’s TV View, incidentally) then it’s a good thing you know where to find PMP.
The differences are fairly obvious - and the ‘attempt’ by Plex to remove PMP from their lineup - didn’t go over well with the community (so, yes, PMP will be around for the foreseeable future):
both have the same date - but the Meltdown and subsequent backtrack to higher and safer ground went on, and on, and on, and on, until a new and exciting direction was mapped out for PMP…lol
I wouldn’t suggest Plex try that again soon, or we all pretty much know what’s gonna happen.
Agreed, the HTPC user contingent was out in full force on that one. I suppose if I used PMP in an HTPC environment I’d have taken umbrage with the decision as well. I’m lucky in that I use Plex Media Server and its client apps in ways that Plex’s decisions rarely affect me negatively.
The other thing that’s become clear is that PMP is available for earlier OS versions (Windows 7/MacOS 10.12) , whereas the new player is only certified for newer OS versions (Windows 10/MacOS 10.13).
Also PMP lets you adjust audio settings, eg set passthrough necessary if you have a receiver set up for Dolby Atmos etc. the docs say audio transcoding takes little processing power, but I found high bit rate videos with Dolby Atmos soundtracks the video portion will play smoothly while the audio portion would have small blanks in the output. Not acceptable.
