@Stevo808

Recommend not using 1.30.0

Use no higher than 1.29.2 for now.

Also please confirm DEBUG logging is enabled so we can look at the logs

Do your playback test.
Download logs (they will tell us what the video itself is and what PMS tried to do)

Hi Chuck,

Thank you for the input.

Yea once I found out my raspberry pi is ARM v 7 I was able to update my plex media server as version 1.29.2.6364 sucessfully… I have debug logging enabled.

I am trying am getting a new copy of the videos I was trying to play. So I can update you in a few days on this with the logs.

Hi Chuck,

I got a new copy of the videos I was trying to watch on plex on my rasp pi.

On my pc in chrome I tried playing the videos from the web interface it sais the server is not powerful enough.

But on my roku when I go to plex app. I had tried to play the videos and it said cannot direct play this item, direct play is disabled. In my settings on app I had direct play on auto.
So I turned direct play off.
rebooted my pi
tried playing the items again with direct play disabled. I still got the error on my roku app saying cannot direct play this item. direct play is disabled.

As for the logs I keep trying to get them from the UI but nothing happens when I click to download logs.

I vaguely remember this faulty error message showing on this item in the past but I forget how you helped me get round it.

For now I will keep trying from time to time as it might be a caching issue. Maybe thats what i did last time is redownload the plex app on my roku im not sure.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as im slowly getting back into computers.

Hi Chuck,

OK I have the latest plex media server on my pi with the movies in a library.

My roku with the latest plex app. RP is set as primary server.Direct play disabled. I go to those videos and it says it cannot play them as direct play is diabled on this item. im confused because of its disabled on the item i have it disabled.

Anyways my muscles cease to work so ill recheck this in a few days when im better.

Can you run ‘mediainfo’ on the file, lets see what codecs are required to play it back.

Hi,

Its the first season of king of queens. So I installed media info ran it against the first episode and got this output

Unless you have directplay, no armv7 will ever work with HEVC.

It’s not strong enough. H.264 only is best you can hope for.

Do you mean on your server? If so, that’s it. You’ve turned off the ability for your server to transcode videos. Although your Pi isn’t going to do a good job at it anyways.

So I turned direct play off.

You’ve turned off the ability for the Roku to play the file as-is. You do not want to turn this off.

On my pc in chrome I tried playing the videos from the web interface it sais the server is not powerful enough.

Plex Web does not support HEVC so it wants your server to transcode it to H264. Since you turned off the ability to transcode, this will just fail. Don’t use Web with HEVC.

Chuck,

thanks ok will turn on direct play

Movie fan plex

yes I turned of transcoding on my rp server

should i turn it on???

direct play is off on my roku app, I will turn it on

To both repliers::::
Guys can you tell me

What i need to do

I realize by now I should turn direct play on as trascoding is off

anything else

Choices are:

  1. Upgrade the ARMv7 to something bigger
    -or-
  2. Make 100% certain to avoid HEVC video .

(go through what you have and make certain recent acquisitions didn’t grab some – as it is becoming the standard now — and why you should consider upgrading hardware)

Hi Guys,

Thanks I got the HEVC videos to play had to select force direct play.

thank you both very much.

Steve

I have a RPi3 set up as a PMS to a 2020 Samsung TV, I make sure all videos are h.264 or h.265, audio is AC-3, and subtitles are SRT, Direct Play set to FORCE. Never any problems as the Samsung TV can natively handle all 3 codecs, no transcoding necessary. Not super flexible but I understood that going in by using a RPi3 that sacrifices would have to be made, it has enough power to stream 80 mbps. Its the perfect setup for its use.
