Plex media server cannot smoothly stream transcoded interlaced video to firefox and edge

Server Version#: 1.30.2.6563
Player Version#: 4.100.1 (plex web firefox)

Plex cannot seem to smoothly stream video transcoded from a 1080i MPEG2 with AC3 audio source to ANY transcoded format played back in the plex web interface in firefox.

I have done a lot of testing with many different variables on this. Some notes:

  • Tested on 4GLTE, 5G, Wifi, and wired gigabit connections
  • Tested with 480i, 720p, and 1080i source material - ONLY 1080i material is problematic
  • Tested on android, ipad, and windows 10 (all in firefox on their platforms, although on ipad it is of course rendering with safari)
  • Tested on edge in windows 10 - same behavior
  • ONLY 1080i source material plays back choppy
  • It SEEMS not to be a transcoding speed/power issue as I can see the transcoding progress by watching the plex transcode directory. In fact, the files in the transcoding directory seem to be ahead of the point in the video playback on the player device

I think it has something to do with how the chunks are being sent by the server. The choppiness is very regular and if I had to guess the stutters happen where each new chunk arrives. In other words this seems to be a streaming issue, not a transcoding issue

Direct play of the source material works fine in android and ipad apps, but I don’t think that would be affected by a bug in the streaming. Direct play of the source material is not possible through plex web interface.
