I want to use Plex Media Server to monitor home security cameras. So I need to determine if the plex media server is compatible with camera security systems. If so, what systems and/or cameras are compatible, and also what else is going to be required to setup such a system?
I mean standalone systems that use a DVR or NVR recorder with cameras (wireless and/or wired) connected to it. Examples of what I mean (which I know dont work with plex but are presented to clarify my question) are Swanns security system, Night Owl, Lorex, etc…
If so, does plex media server recognize the DVR, NVR if I try to add it to my library?
If not, then is plex media server compatible with wireless security cameras? If so, please name some brands, companies, etc…
I think you would need to have your security system videos save files on some basis, hourly, semi daily, daily, whatever to some file-system and then have your Plex system routinely copy them into an “Other” tv library via some scheduled job.
I suspect some will suggest something like TVheadend or Xsteve and that might work, but I have not experience with either of these apps.
@scorpioet2 if you can tell us more about your specific needs maybe we can suggest other ideas.
You said you wanted to use Plex but why Plex? Just to have everything in one place?
What devices will you be using?
And, you said you wanted to “monitor” cameras but does that include reviewing recordings, or only live viewing?
There are a lot of apps on lots of platforms that can view live camera feeds. If you need PTZ control or reviewing recordings, it gets a lot more complicated.
(If you have not heard of Blue Iris, I would look at that.)
I wanted to use Plex cause I read that it had this capability. Granted there was not much explanation of the details which is why I posed the question. Ability to live feed the cameras would be optimal, which means I have everything running via 1 program. Multiple programs dedicated to only 1 function is illogical if 1 program can do it all. And yes I looked into Blue Iris and liked what I read.
Am just in the investigation stage at this point, researching and learning. Looked at dedicated DVR and NVR systems but the one I tried would not work as described. I like the way Plex works, and want to find out if its possible, or just too difficult to do. Maybe I will just have to find a DVR/NVR system (for live camera view) that can link to Plex and allow access to the DVR/NVR stored camera video.
Any suggestions would be helpful in my research. Just please be detailed in your response…assume I don’t know anything.
Thanks
