[Feature Request]
I am un able to find any other post that seems to be an official feature request for the following. I LOVE PLEX!!! One software that allows me to keep tabs on all my content. Music, Movies, Home Videos, Live TV Etc. My network drive is loaded with massive amount of video and picture of my children. Without plex, the ability to play this content to my TV becomes a task that would seem more work that its worth. Unless of course I have hours to spend getting my computer hooked up to the TV to see and hear this content. Plex has created the one stop shop that I, and many others have been looking for, that keeps our media right at our finger tips.
This is merely a request and am curious as to what others think about this. Here I go.
I have 4 security cameras installed on the exterior of my house. All these cameras are IP POE cameras that have a number of features. I manly use these cameras for 24 hour recording on a “just in case” basis if I suspect suspicious activity on my property. These cameras currently record to a NVR, (network video recorder) that is attached to my network. The footage from these cameras can also be recorded via any free/open source ONVIF compatible NVR software for your computer as well. Example: would be like Blue iris or something similar.
I am also able to view a live stream of the cameras on my phone from outside my home via the app provided by the company who made these cameras or any onvif compatible app. These cameras are ONVIF compatible. See this link for a better description of what it means.
It would be incredibly helpful to have the ability to view these cameras live stream both on my TV at home and on my iPhone remotely via Plex. I think the convenience factor here is obvious. I suppose that this could be possible through RTPS or some similar streaming protocol. This would be up to the Plex developers to decide. It would be great for Plex to also give you the option to set up quick recording option via the app. For example, if I need to set a recording it would be nice to do so via plex with a quick record option of 10min, 15min or longer record options. Plex would then trigger the recording for a single camera or a set of cameras, and dump the video into a user defined library.
I am sure that many great ideas could come about with this. I just think that this would be a really cool addition to the Plex world.
I personally don’t see any specific benefit to integrating these features into Plex. In order to be useful the Plex team would have to implement an entire suite of video surveillance features which in and of itself is a pretty big undertaking. I would much rather they spend time fixing/improving what is already there. Especially with the horrible state the Android App is currently in.
That being said you can probably program either the NVR or the Camera itself to FTP video to a folder when motion is detected. If you add that folder as a library in Plex you would get your recordings. Not really a perfect (or real time) solution but should work. The photos library type supports pics and videos and if I am not mistaken a folder represents an album so each camera could be organized a bit.
Personally I use Synology’s surveillance station. I think it would be better if Synology,QNAP, Etc themselves were to write a Plex Channel to give some basic integration.
Would think integration could be done on basic live-view-recode basis - like other streams.
Agree that alarm features / movement detection a.o should probably not be done in Plex - but I see a great need for live streaming part. I have several cams - among other 1 overlooking bird feeding tower, and one overlooking our chicken den. Also had idea for one in birds nesting box.
All just for the fun of looking at the stream in between - either remote - or on tv - and here Plex is just the unbeatable app.
So - YES - there are specific needs to be able to include all sorts of webcam streams into Plex!!
Is there still no way to have Plex handle security camera live streams sourced through Blue Iris’ web interface, or RTSP direct from the cameras, or some other means? Plex looks great but this is a must-have for me. Am currently using Jriver which handles this well by allowing a user to add URL menu items which bring up a live video web page sourced by Blue Iris.
Not only that I totally agree they should add this into plex to view and catch the stream and movement but I also want to a way when it dictate motion it will also auto launched on every single devices and broadcast on every single devices and power on the the smart TV and broadcast along with the google assistant hub. So for example if there is a motion that was being captured and you are in your kitchen cooking dinner and your Google assistant is in the other room with your smart tv it will announce that there is motion in the front yard and will broadcast on all the smart devices on your phone tv ect for the live feed. That also will help with older devices that are slowing down and beside tapping on the notification just to view it, it will just announced and auto launched the live stream feed and I want to see it where you can set am specific amount of storage to be save before it override loop and if motion is captured it will also dump the file and back up the file onto another cloud base server or another drive server so just in case the theft do fine your computer and take your drives you will have back up copies in a different location it that added protection for the consumer that will make plex server a whole new level
Long time happy/heavy plex pass user! I would love to be able to feed one or many of my webcams around my property in or on my pms server. Please add this feature in one way shape or form, even if it is community supported.
i was wondering if it would be possible to add a webcam streaming feature to plex. i have rescue dogs, and it would be really handy to be able to log and check on my dogs when i go out (some of the rescues are really scared and i often have to spend a lot of time training them to be able to be alone for an hour or so) also it could have a record to the cloud option for premium, so you could use it for sercurity too
Would it be possible to add in support for ONVIF IP cameras and or h.264 local device streams ?
Having recently added home IP cameras I’ve found every member of the family asking about whether or not they could simply pull up the camera grid as well as individual cameras on Plex.
Also. If possible it would be nice to have this segmented off into it’s own overview section (library).
This is a good idea Zordrack. Why not have all of our streams come through a single app. Ring charges for storing videos. I should have this on my server for free (or with PlexPass). Someone has to make money.
I’m perfectly good with this being a PlexPass feature.
But yes. I would love to see a one stop shop for all my media and I’m very much looking for Plex to be that shop.
It’s fast, simple, powerful and easy enough to use that the entire family can do it without any hand holding.
That’s a win in my book.
