Plex Media Server Crashes On Run with Error Fault Module UCRTBASE.DLL

Hey Folks,

Plex and my computer (Windows Server 2012 R2) have been working well for what seems like forever. Every now and again, I need to update Plex manually, but generally I have updates running for the WS 2012 R2 and Plex, and everything just keeps running.

Yesterday my Plex players couldn’t find the Plex server and when I logged into WS 2012 R2 Plex media server had crashed, and I get this Problem Signature:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX64
Application Name: Plex Media Server.exe
Application Version: 1.29.0.6244
Application Timestamp: 632d05b4
Fault Module Name: ucrtbase.DLL
Fault Module Version: 10.0.14393.2990
Fault Module Timestamp: 5caeb96f
Exception Offset: 000000000006e00e

Exception Data: 0000000000000007
OS Version: 6.3.9600.2.0.0.272.7
Locale ID: 1033

A few updates rolled in on WS 2012 R2 before I caught the crash. I can’t recall if these were installed May or may not be related. (KB5017367, KB5017396, KB5017398)

If I close the error and try to run Plex media server, I get the same error right away.

To resolve, I tried:
-Plex Media Server uninstall, WS 2012 R2 restart, check for any windows updates, restart, and reinstall Plex Media Server x64. (Same issue)
-Plex Media Server uninstall, WS 2012 R2 restart, check for any windows updates, restart, and reinstall Plex Media Server x86 (for funzies). (Same issue)

HELP!

Server Version#: 1.29.0.6244 (Current Version on Submission)
Player Version#: Never make it to the player, media server crashes on startup.

Seeing the same thing on a Windows 10 machine running Plex server. Its been happening to me for quite a while. I usually just reboot the box, but this is the first time i’ve looked into the event logs to see what is actually going on.

Running Windows 10 (21H2) with September Updates. Plex Server (1.28.2.6151) but will update to (1.29.1.6313-f4cdfea9c) now.

Actually just noticed that new version has 64bit availability, so will try this and report if issue happens again.

Please upload server logs zip running with the latest 1.29.1 beta

There is a known issue with Clean Bundles causing a crash

Please make sure you debug logging enabled on the server - settings / server / show advanced / general

Noticed this same issue on Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.819. Plex Media Server was downloaded and then attempted to update 1.29.2.6364.

I have tried…

  1. Running System File Checker scan to check for corrupted Windows system files
  2. Uninstalled Plex Media Server and installed it again
  3. Repaired Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2012 (x64)

Plex Media Server runs for about two hours befor it stops.

We do have an issue that leads to crashes when there are SQLITE3 / SOCI database related exceptions / errors

This is expected to be fixed in Plex Media Server 1.30.1

Debug server logs covering the time of the crash would be needed to confirm if this is the case and also look into the SQLITE3 / SOCI exception and the cause of it

The 1.30.1 will be just to stop the crash.

The temporary workaround for me was this…

  1. Uninstall Plex Media Server by using Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

  2. Rename the following folder, where username is a folder named after the user that Plex Media Server runs as…

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server

Rename it to…

Plex Media Server.old

  1. Reinstall Plex Media Server.

  2. Add your Libraries back to Plex Media Server and re-create your Playlists.

Note; If you want to go back to your previous configuration, that caused the issue, you can perform the same steps, except, rename the Plex Media Server folder to Plex Media Server.new and remove .old from the Plex Media Server.old folder.

Good luck!

Folks,

I wanted to say thank you for the replies. I think it may have been related to an OS SSD that failed shortly after I made this post. Other applications started to fail, then the OS SSD failed hard.

I got a new OS drive, then reinstalled, and the good news, the new version 1.30.1 is working. I don’t know for sure, but I think the error was likley from the SSD failure…
