Plex Media Server Crashing randomly - identified as crashes in nvEncMFTH264.dll & nvEncMFThevc.dll

Raised for @Mackon (from Discourse Temp on old forums)

@Mackon

Long time Plex user, however my Plex Media Server has been crashing randomly recently and I don’t 100% know how to read the logs to troubleshoot what the issue might be. I’ve looked into the scheduled tasks to see if that’s closing it, but no dice. I’m running Windows 10 64-bit

@sa2000

I can see a number of crashes within the Hardware Transcoding Nvidia dll’s - but there may also be other crashes

These were the times of the nvidia dll crashes for Plex Media Server

Jun 10, 2018 10:57:52   Crash in nvEncMFTH264.dll
Jun 16, 2018 06:19:22   Crash in nvEncMFThevc.dll
Jun 16, 2018 20:15:46   Crash in nvEncMFThevc.dll
Jun 19, 2018 09:52:39   Crash in nvEncMFTH264.dll

Are these the crash times that you are referring to ?

The logs show a relaunch of Plex Media Server at 04:12:55 on Jun 20, 2018
Was there a crash then (logs prior to this time were up to 04:00:00 am - the time suggests it may be a scheduled restart ? Or just a coincidence that it was on the dot at 4am?

If you do not know why it went down at 4am, have a look at the windows event log
eventvwr.exe selecting Windows Logs and then Application event log

With regards to the nvidia dll crashes - check their web site for up to date drivers and issues
I do not have any logs going back to the these crashes. The earliest log time was 01:35 am on 20th

What model is the nvidia adapter / firmware level?

@Mackon

I set a scheduled task script to close and reopen PMS at 4AM every day in an attempt to reset the server if it was crashing from being left on too long. Just my crude attempt at fixing it.

Yes those June 10-19 times were the random crashes I was referring to. I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 1080 with the 398.11 firmware, which I believe is the latest firmware update. Using slimdrivers I haven’t found any other out-of-date drivers on my computer either.

I’m considering reinstalling PMS and seeing if there was a corruption somewhere in the PMS firmware updates. Thoughts?

@Xhaka

Yep. It’s a painless process, to be honest.

Lets get some logs to go with the next nvidia encoders crashes. The logs you provided were many hours after and do not cover the time of the crashes

The stack frames in two crashes I looked had some references to subtitles. May be the issue is confined to the Nvidia encoders and use of subtitles

The logs would show what was being done before the crash and may need then to have some sample files

@sa2000 Just wanted to give an update on my server’s status. I repaired the PMS and disabled hardware acceleration and haven’t run into a crash since. It might have had something to do with some subtitles and the Nvidia hardware as you described. Not sure if this is a bug I should continue to identify so fix for future releases, but thank you for your help!

Yes disabling hardware acceleration would avoid the Nvidia DLLs.
It could be a bug in the nVidia encoders - regardless it needs to be investigated by nVidia to establish why the dlls are crashing. Having logs from the server would help in providing additional information relating to what was being done before the dll crashing

I am getting the crash dumps passed to nVidia and would like to also pass on logs with debug logging enabled so we understand what leads to the crashes in the graphics card dll’s. They would want to know the steps to reproduce the issue and details of the nVidia hardware and software versions and the system they are installed on

The information I have already is

Windows 10 64-bit
Nvidia GeForce 1080 with the 398.11 firmware

Could you re-enable hardfware acceleration and have debug logging enabled on the server (settings / server / genera;l / show advanced) and restart the server after that and when you get the crash, restart the server and capture the logs zip (settings / server / help / download logs)

Could you also capture this file and zip and send me by PM

Start an elevated command line window (start / run / cmd (right click on command prompt and select Run As Administrator) then type command
dispdiag
This will write to a file like this
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DispDiag-20180627-020512-1364-24216.dat
zip and send to me

Thanks
