Plex Media Server Freezing Windows 10

Server Version#: Version 1.14.0.5465
Player Version#: Roku TV and Android

For a while now I’ve been having issues with my Windows 10 server (Core i7 with 8 gigs of ram) and buffering playback on various devices. Most media is played on either Roku TVs, Roku Players or Roku Sticks as well as my Android.

It started to get bad a few weeks ago when I would see disconnect or server not powerful enough errors. I would check the server and see that while it showed Plex Media Server was running it was not responding and I couldn’t end the process. I would have to reboot. Things would work well for about a day or so and then return.

So I decided it was time to simply refresh the PC. I backed up the Plex database according to this article (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201539237-backing-up-plex-media-server-data/) and re-installed my system from scratch.

I was able to restore the Plex database just fine and for a day and a half things were better. No buffering, no errors so I thought the problem was solved.

Today however, I began to see playbacks freeze after playing for a while and get stuck at 33% loading. I would check the server and it would be completely unresponsive and frozen. Only way to recover was a hard reboot of the system. This has occurred on several different players and different media.

I’m really not sure what is going on and am hoping someone can look at the logs and give me a hand. I had debug logs enabled during one of the crashes. There’s a lot in there and I’m not sure what’s relevant.

Thanks.

It is impossible to look into this when debug logging has been disabled.

So please enable it and leave it on
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

Then I would recommend upgrading to the beta release that came our earlier this week - 1.14.0.5468 which has a fix for a deadlock that would show as if the server froze

when you get a freeze, restart and download the logs
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/ and attach here

Debug logging was only disabled after the freeze occurred. The Plex Media Server.5.log file contains debug messages in it. Don’t know if you saw that one or not. To me, it didn’t look like anything useful in there.

However, the issue did indeed stop after the latest update. I saw the deadlock issue reported in there before I installed it.

Thanks for the help.

I did not notice any playback requests during the period debug logging was enabled -
November 19th from 19:22 to the end of the log = 19:26

If there was a lock (like the one fixed in 1.14.0.5468) it may have been set before 19:22 - the time when you enabled debug logging

In future please restart the server after enabling debug logging so that we capture the start up sequence in logs which is important to troubleshooting issues.

We have to wait until you get the problem on 1.14.0.5468
