Ever since an update a few months ago, maybe early 2018 or late 2017, occasionally, my plex server goes offline when I log into the plex app on my phone. I then have to remote login with Teamviewer to my Windows 10 PC where my server is, to see what happened, and it says, Plex Server Not Accessible outside of Network.
I have to manually disable the server, wait until it says “disabled” and then click “enable” the network. Then it says “Fully accessible outside of this network” with the green checkmark. It lasts like this for a week or so, and then the process repeats.
I have reset my home router, made sure windows is up to date, Plex Server is up to date (Version 1.13.2.5154)…but I can’t figure it out!!!
It never happened like this before.
I know users may suggest setting up a port, but I wanted to know if it could be a bug or if any other users have experienced this.
I know my friend who has lifetime plex server has experienced the same problem
I have my port forwarded manually and have also been seeing many random inaccessible alerts from Tautulli. The server seems to go up and down several times an hour. Sometimes when I check, the server is in fact inaccessible from the outside network. Other times, it is still accessible, and as soon as I check, I get an alert from Tautulli that it is back online.
It just started giving me fits within the past 24 hours. I’ve tried manually specifying the port; port-forwarding changes; Changing port forwarding from TCP/UDP to TCP only… ; The connectivity seems to die within a few minutes. And for some additional “odd”, it’s taking some time to establish a connection and right now (since I turned off the manual specified port again) it claims it’s accepting connections on (external) port zero. Zero???
I’m the same, mines has been inaccessible for nearly a month with no change. Tried everything, resetting my router, manually port forwarding, resetting my server, reinstalling plex, reboots, and on, and on, and on… nothing has worked. I am now considering giving up on it and trying another media serving solition!
I had my port forwarding set manually for many months, but after a version change some time ago, I was forced to try “auto” because I was unable to established a connection manually. Then, after switching to automatic, all was well again. I suspect that whatever is happening, it’s not on my end because I’ve been running this version since it was released w/o issues until the past hours. Strangely enough, after giving up this morning and posting about it earlier, it’s holding steady using external port 0.
I just want to be able to count on it - regardless of methodology.
After establishing the manual port forwarding in your router,
and putting the right external port number into
Settings - Server - Remote Access - ‘Manually specify public port’
and filling the accompanying check box
Test the accessibility with http://canyouseeme.org/
If this website shows ‘Accessible’, then just leave it be.
Or try to restart Plex Server and then leave it be.
The remote access status will come around eventually.
For those, who are running Plex server on Windows: do this
I got some confusing results early on. Maybe you have some insight. After having “thought” it might have resolved itself, the problem continued after a delay. Every time I changed the port, Plex was reporting that it was “reachable”. However, using the website to test for accessibility, it continued to report that “connection timed out”. So now I’m confused as to how Plex was reporting itself as reachable while canyouseeme is reporting connection timed out. So after a shot in the dark, I manually switched it to redirect outside port 32400 to plex and BINGO! canyouseeme reports it accessible.
So it appears Comcast is blocking more and more ports? And why is Plex giving me a ‘false positive’ when I change ports?
On the page Settings - Server - Remote access
you don’t “change ports”.
You can only change ports by going into your router’s configuration menu and defining a different port forwarding.
Only after you did that, you inform Plex about which external port number you used in the port forwarding by putting the number into ‘Manually specify public port’.
Remember: when you create the port forwarding, you can use almost any port number as the external number. But the internal port number must always be 32400.
First source of error when creating the port forwarding in your router:
many routers don’t make it clear in their user interface which one is the external port number and which is the internal port number.
So you may end up creating a forwarding from 32400 external to e.g. 35713 internal
(instead of the other way around).
Some routers don’t even allow you to create a port forwarding which uses different numbers for external and internal port.
I think I understand the port forwarding since I’ve been using it and plex for many years. Right now I have external users (outside my local network) who are accessing my server and watching movies, all the while my server settings tell me that I’m not available outside my network. Canyouseeme also tells me it can see my service - while Plex tells me I’m not available.
I’m having the same issue however people are unable to connect outside my network…
I’ve been using Plex for years now… For some reason all of a sudden I am unable to access outside my network… I have done DMZ and forwarding with no-avail.
I have reset Plex launched as an admin. I have reset modem and made sure all ports where open (again even tried DMZ). Disabled all other network cards on the device. Closed all other non-important services and everything… Some times it just works others its stops working for no reason.
So, living here in the US, I have a Verizon FIOS router but also an EERO multi-router setup (https://eero.com/). The eero assigns a second static IP address for every device through their setup.
Anyway, the long complicated solution was that I needed to log into the Verizon FIOS router/internet settings page (192.168.1.1) and then figure out which FIOS IP address my Plex Server was using. Because setting the EERO IP address as a static IP did nothing. i got lucky, but somehow in refreshing my devices, the FIOS IP appeared, and then I set that as a static IP. Then I was able to port forward to that IP, using 32400 as a fixed port.
After that, “remote access” with port forwarding has Plex has worked for the last year or so. It took me a few hours to figure this out, with Plex forums and Verizon forums, but I’m thankful it all just works now.
