Plex Media Server making audio True HD 7.1 Instead of THE FULL Dolby Atmos CHANNELS

Hi guys,

So just as I thought that I was moving forward with the audio problems I seem to be somewhat back at square one. LOL…

I have tried to attach screenshots in a picture attached to this topic hopefully to assist me explain my problem.

So the problem is this:
Plex media server (version Version 1.5.0.3501… I actually updated it from version 1.4 this evening just in case this was the problem) and for some very strange reason it is displaying the audio soundtrack as True HD 7.1 Instead of Dolby Atmos…

I have an example of a movie called SWISS ARMY MAN… You will notice from the screenshot that was some very strange reason Plex media server is incorrectly detecting or transcoding or whatever the correct terminology is, the wrong sound.

File Swiss.Army.Man.2016.Bluray.1080p.TrueHD-7.1.Atmos.x264-Grym.mkv

The following is extracted from the information within the Plex media server interface:

Codec TRUEHD
Channels 7.1
Bitrate 4685 kbps
Language English
Audio Channel Layout 7.1
Bit Depth 24
Sampling Rate 48000 Hz

The above is completely incorrect as I have tested this exact video with another media player system and it works absolutely perfectly in Dolby Atmos, and my Yamaha RXA 3060, shows that it is decoding via HDMI Dolby Atmos… I also have a dedicated cinema room and that is using the top of the range Yamaha CX A5100 & MX A5000…!

I am giving you the above information so that you are aware my other media players and systems easily run Dolby Atmos and the only weak link in the chain seems to be Plex media server…
I am however offering this as my opinion as as I thought that this would be closest to the source before it is streamed to any media device.

By the way I am using the latest 2017 Nvidia shield with the latest software update installed. However, again I do not believe that the problem is on the media player client at all as when I log into the Plex media server interface you can clearly see that it is already detecting and picking up the wrong audio codec.

I also have many other Dolby Atmos demonstration media video files which are working perfectly in my other media systems where Serviio is the server and various other media players of the clients and the Dolby Atmos works absolutely perfectly in these instances.

I have really tried my absolute best to think of everything before posting this topic but I am stuck now and would really really appreciate your assistance and guidance as I am probably doing something very silly that I’m overlooking and I look forward to your kind help.

Kind regards

is no one able to help me please?

Is it possible, that this is just a “information”-bug and is due to the fact, that Atmos and DTS:X are embeded formats of DolbyTrueHD and DTS-HD-Master Codecs.

My plex system (Nvidia Shield Pro) shows the same information in the gui but is passing trough the correct ATMOS or DTS:X codec to my AVR (Marantz) and the Marantz shows that it is playing Atmos or DTS:X

same here for me, but I wish it was correct - it would be nice to know if it is a Dolby ATMOS track or is my AMP playing a TrueHD with Surround Sound upmixing

Just found this thread and was having the same issue on AppleTV. The input on the AppleTV would only be 5.1. However when playing the same video file on Nvidia Shield TV it plays in Atmos. I have it atmos enabled in the settings so it must be Apple TV and Plex issue

If the media file headers are indicating 7.1, PMS will use that information.
Judging the fact you have downloaded content, anything is possible. The audio track may have been re-encoded or default tracks selected

afaik appletv doesn’t support 7.1 so the audio is trancoded which results in loss of atmos.

All apple products support only 5.1 core audio.
Apple did not submit to the licensing requirements for anything beyond core.
