So I got the new nVidia shield pro and setup PMS and Plex app. Since nVidia decided to only make their device in a 16 GB version I bought and connected an external nVme drive.
System
Nvidia Shield Pro 2019* 16GB with the following installed
Plex Media server (latest version)
Plex (latest version
Samsung 970 NVME (soon will get the 980) with a lot of content
Two issues
To scan the movies that are stored in the nVme drive, I need to go to my laptop, log into app.plex.tv and from there select scan. This seems silly as I should be able to use the software in nVidia shield. When I launch the PMS app, redirects me to the Plex app. So, how do I scan for new content by using the Plex app in the Shield
When I exit the plex app in the Shield, the media server turns off and I cannot view the movies on other devices (e.g., laptop). My Shield is set to never turn off. I do not have power saver turned on for Plex. I’d like to keep this available at all times in case I want to stream to another room or when i travel.
1 - Typically, Plex Web is the wat you manage Plex Media Server, regardless where it’s running.
However, since the Shield is also a Plex client, you are in luck. Using the Plex app on the Shield, look at your list of libraries along the left and scroll to the one you want. Look to the left, you’ll see the 3 dot menu. Pick that. In there is an option to “scan library files”.
Like all other versions of PMS, the one on the Shield runs in the background. There is no management app except Plex Web.
2 - If the Plex client app is running, you can access the PMS from your laptop, but as soon as you leave the app, the connection is lost. That right?
That shouldn’t happen. PMS should always be running. My Shield is in sleep mode right now and I can still access it and play files.
If this is happening I’ll need the logs from PMS to see if it is shutting down or not.
My shield uses an external 550 GB Toshiba Drive. Its mounted to NAS on which the libraries are. Following issues (in comparrission to PC Plex Server that is running fine on the same network:
Shield looses connection every now and then
Shield is noot reachable outside th eWIFI every now and then
Library Scans and building up of all pric s is slow
Connection is to slow to stream outside nnetwork / buffering constantly
Is the conclusion that NVIDEA Shield Pro is not suitable for Plex Servers?
Dear MovieFan.Plex, here the server logs, please help. PMS stops randomly and sometimes new login into Plex is helping sometimes a new start of the shield. Sometime PMS is not shown in the settings of the plex app on the shield. All strange,
Ok in case anybody is interested: I seem to have solved the issue by switching of another plex server on windows running on the same Plex Account. Since shuttingdown thi server, everything works now for around one week. The only remaining isssue is that availability outside the network is shown as unavailable while in fact server is available.
Sorry for the delayed response. I’m not sure why shutting down your Windows PMS would make Shield PMS work better. I looked at your previous PMS logs and I see that PMS on your Shield was having trouble finding it’s IP address. Check your network setting and make sure the “preferred network interface” is set properly. Also, you have the Plex DLNA server enabled. I would turn that off if you don’t need it.
Thanks Movie.Fan. I checked network settings and set “preferred network interface” to eth IP Adress of shield…
This time it worked about 7 days in a row which is already remarkable. However then crash came slowly, first PMS was unavailable via LTE mobile network (outside WIFI) but still worked on Wifi connected devices. Then this also faded. I Restarted after checking that external SSD had no file system disorder with a windows PC and PMS worked only on Shield connected to the TV but not on WIFI connected Devices in my network.
I checked first NAS connection and external drive, all fine then PMS settings and in Shield on TV under PMS headline nothing could be seen, so usually it shows PMS Stopped or running…simply nothing could be seen. Restarted Shield no change, then changed to static IP, no internet connection, restarted. PMS settings do not show any entries under PMS…help! this is…urgh
Now it works on Android Tab S7 Plex app but not on web app on the same device, on TV connected directly to Shield, but not on Ethernet second TV or other connected devices via WIFI, I am crying

Now, suddenly nothing works anymore, PMS not working on any device Ethernmet, Wifi just thinking of spaming all social media on wtf the Shield PMS is ggrrrr
Now again available on Plex for android apps on Tab s7 and Samsung TVs (2 in total) but not on same device via web app, still crying and regretting buying this device in the first place
Honestly. the issues you are now describing sound like networking issues to me. I wouldn’t totally rule out something with the app, but it shouldn’t matter if you are connected via WiFi or ethernet.
If you can provide logs from the Android app when it’s not working, I can take a look.
