Plex Media Server Remote Access not working

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#:

Been banging my head against a wall and still can’t figure out my Remote Access isn’t working. I have followed the steps in the Troubleshooting guides, set port forwarding on both my Router and machine, have a Static IP and all and still every time I check there is access for a few seconds then no access. I have tried turning off my firewall and AV just to see if anything helps.

Here is what settings on my Router look like too,

I am looking for anything that I can do to get this working.

You are the weekly winner! Plex please fix this.

The built in test is misleading because it lazily shows green before it begins testing. Your remote access didn’t briefly work and then fail – it was never working.

Do not trust or even use the internal test. Use an external port checking web tool.

Also, don’t you need to turn on the “manually specify public port” option?

Notice the IP address in the Asus router, 100.64.37.16. Your ISP is using CG-NAT addressing which is incompatible with Plex Media Server remote access. It places the server in a double-NAT situation.

Contact your ISP. Ask if they can provide a public, IPv4 address that supports port forwarding. It does not have to be a static IP address, but that is what many ISPs provide.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I will have to call the ISP, was hoping to avoid this as I heard it may cost extra to do it but it may be my only option. Is there anything else to try besides that? Or is this something that everyone has to go through?

There are other options, but they also cost money.

IMHO, your ISP providing a public IPv4 that supports port forwarding is the best option (assuming they don’t want an arm and a leg for it). It keeps things very simple on the Plex end, since no VPNs, tunnels, etc. are required.

A second option is using a VPN that provides a public IPv4 and supports port forwarding to a fixed (not randomly assigned) port. PureVPN claims they can do this, as do others. I do not use PureVPN and have never tried such with any VPN provider so don’t know how reliable it might be.

A third option is to use a tunnel through Cloudflare or similar providers. This requires acquiring a domain name (not expensive) and setting up a proxy server on the Internet. Many people do this. I’ve never seen a step by step guide (I’m sure it exists, I’ve just not seen one). No idea of cost.

Thank you. I will look into these options.
