Plex Media Server Stopped Working Last night MSVCP140, VCRUNTIME140 + 0xc000007b Errors

Server Version#: 1.16.6.1592-b9d49bdb7 (latest download on the website)

PLEX has been working fine for me for over a year and yesterday all of a sudden I am getting some errors and PLEX Media Server will not start.

I initially got errors telling me that MSVCP140.dll + VCRUNTIME140.dll files where missing. After a little googling the issue, I managed to manually install them. However, now when I open the application I get an error - 0xc000007b

Here is where it gets tricky… I can see this error refers to the Visual C++ Redist files. All of the online fixes suggest simply deleting the files, reinstalling them and then the app. Seems to work for most people. However, here is my issue -

  1. I locate the Visual C++ redist in my programs and features. I notice I have 2017 but not 2015. (All the solutions online point to 2015). I try to uninstall 2017 and it says successful but it does not remove them from my list.
  2. I tried to instal 2015 files anyway but it will not let me because I have the 2017 present.
  3. I tried uninstalling and repairing the PLEX Media server app multiple times with no success.

So basically I am stuck in a loop. I cannot uninstall 2017 Visual C++ redist files for some unknown reason and cannot find a solution online. I cannot instal the 2015 files which PLEX seems to need. I cannot acces or use my PLEX media server.

Very frustrating and looking for help please. I am currently using Windows 10 desktop PC that has been fully updated as of today.

Thanks

Try the repair option.
If no repair option exists then download the version that displayed in uninstall program list(x86/x64)
Download vs_redist.x86.exe 2017 32-bit
Download vs_redist.x64.exe 2017 64-bit

Open a command window w/admin rights and point to the downloaded vc_redist and type vc_redist.x64.exe /uninstall (vc_redist.x86.exe /uninstall for 32bit)
Chose repair. Reboot machine, then try to uninstall 2017. Reboot again.

Download 2015 x86

Install 2015 Redist x86.

Hi NewPlaza, thanks for the reply.

  • I tried to repair and it looked like it did something other than just complete but I still get the same error.
  • I then tried downloading your links and opening a command prompt (w/admin). Choose repair, Reboot and another version has appeared in my programs list. So I currently have 2 x64 (They have different numbers) and 1 x86.
  • I then tried to uninstall - they all say uninstall successfully and rebooted. The 3 are still there.
  • I tried to download the 2015 link and it still will not allow me to instal as there is a newer version.

Very frustrating, as it is the server I cannot access PLEX on anything currently. Any other ideas?

Thanks

I’m at a loss. If you ain’t down with a Windows reinstall or rolling back to a restore point then you may try one or more of the “All-In-One” installer/uninstallers out there.

Please bare in mind. These “All-In-Wonders” are not made by nor endorsed by Microsoft.
So, I guess a use at your own risk disclaimer should be said.

Hi NewPlaza,

Thanks again for the reply. I JUST managed to fix the issue with the help of one of your suggestions. I thought I may as well try one of these if a clean windows 10 wipe was next so I tried the AIO Installer - Uninstalled every option and Installed every option.

Now this step did not work but it led me to a solution. I could now see in my add/remove programs that some years only had x64 and some had x86 versions. I read somewhere in my googling that it should have both versions of each year. So I done some googling and started downloading the missing ones…

I had been using Microsoft.com until now… However, I found a link that had ‘2019’ versions and thought I would try that. This took me to…

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

SUPPORT at Microsoft… Where there is apparently newer versions. This showed up as 2015, 2017 and 2019 on my programs list. It fixed the issue!

I’ve no idea why the support and Microsoft sites seem to be out of sync. OR why windows update did not pick these up but it has resolved it anyway.

Thanks so much for your help, I realise this was not a PLEX issue but a windows issue so you really helped when you didn’t need to. Much appreciated and hopefully this helps someone else.

Thanks!
