Setup Failed - 0x80070005 - Access is denied

Plex Media Server Desktops & Laptops

Was having issues with Plex server quitting unexpectedly, so decided to uninstall and reinstall. When I downloaded Plex-Media-Server-1.13.2.5154-fd05be322 and installed, I got the dreaded 0x80070005 error.

Can anyone help?

Go to the Apps control panel and remove ‘Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 (x86)’

Give Windows a thorough reboot: run cmd.exe, type in shutdown.exe /g /t 0, <Enter>

Then download this and install it (when asked, pick the x86 version) https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=48145

Then download the Plex installer again and try to install it

No, these have nothing to do with Plex.

Did you download and install the linked file?

Not yet. I thought I needed to remove the Visual C++ Redistributable first.

I will do a thorough reboot and then download and install the 2015 Redistributable.

I got this error when trying to install the 2015 Redistributable:

Which instance of the VC++ runtime should I remove?

My options are:

  • VC++ 2012 x86 Additional Runtime - 11.0.61030
  • VC++ 2012 x86 Minimum Runtime - 11.0.61030
  • VC++ 2015 x86 Additional Runtime - 14.0.24215
  • VC++ 2015 x86 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.24215
