Plex Media Server unable to stream transcodes to Plex official clients but Kodi addon works fine

Manjaro install, Ryzen 3600X, RTX 2060. Since a bit of time I’ve been unable to play any transcoded media with the official clients or the web version. Every time I try I get an error code and playback stops.

I can see from nvtop that on the server the transcode starts, then stops two seconds later.

Transcode and playback is perfectly fine in the Kodi addon.

I can provide logs of the server and of two clients, one windows and one linux, which show the behavior. I have been unable to find the culprit except for an obscure Qt error in which it states “DisplayManager: unable to retrieve main display”

I can only help with Server issues. I don’t have PMP.
Have you tested this with the bundled Plex/Web player in your browser?

May I see the Plex logs ZIP file (Download from Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs)

which you collect after:

  1. Verify DEBUG logging is enabled
  2. Verify VERBOSE logging is disabled.
  3. Start / attempt the playback until failure.
  4. Wait 20 seconds for logs to quiesce
  5. Download the logs ZIP
  6. Attach here with your next reply.

Thanks for the logs.

  1. There are no errors reported.
  2. The Nvidia is found and tests as ok
  3. Transcoding starts
  4. I can’t identify which browser you’re using; not Chrome or FireFox
  5. From what I can identify, it looks like only a “Windows” (PMP ?) player is attempted in the logs
  6. The system is still scanning & adding media which makes it more difficult to sort through (- just a note)

Lastly, Please don’t turn VERBOSE back on unless requested. It’s off by default because that mode covers 99.9% of the debugging situations.

Where I am a bit disturbed:

  1. Manjaro linux - Derivative of Arch (which isn’t supported)
  2. Sporting a Redhat kernel ?
  3. Which package manager are you using RPM or PACMAN?

Here’s another log on Windows PMP with Verbose turned off, in which:

  • I connect to the same Manjaro server (which runs okay on Kodi on the same windows client )
  • Browse through a folder, play one sample in 4K
  • Switch it to transcode 1080p 20Mbit
  • Do the same to another file with 720p 4mbps
