Plex Media Server update 1.18.7.2438 hanging

An update just went out with a fix

Plex Media Server 1.18.7.2457

  • (Stability) PMS could hang when using iTunes plugins (#11187)

I can confirm that this version works correctly on my server – thanks!

My server is still doing going online, and after a while it just hangs. I can’t even kill the processes in task manager, and it hangs so hard that I can’t software restart the compur, I need to use the actual restart button.

I’ve tried downgrading / switching versions and it somehow keeps doing the same behavior.

If you go back to the latest version, 1.18.7.2457 you can then get some diagnostics so the issue can be investigated. Initially with a set of server logs with debug logging enabled before the launch and if that shows a deadlock then would need to get the diagnostics needed for deadlocks

For logs

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-02-25_22-57-41.zip (1.9 MB)

Plex Media Server 2.log ends with it going unresponsive, due to some failure in deleting transcoding cache files.

Thanks for the logs. It does look like some form of deadlock/lockout. Lets get the diagnostics we need for a deadlock. This would be:

  • a connections list saved into a text file
  • process dump
  • server logs

See this post which explains how to get the diagnostics

How to revert to plexpass 1.18.6 version?
Do you have download link maybe? (I have a FreeNas and issues with LG WebOS TV AGAIN!)
They fixed it in 1.18.6 but broke again in 1.18.7

Hi, I have followed the fix here and deleted my PMS downloaded and installed 1.18.8.2461

Same problem Web Player will not sign in…“Internal server error. Something went wrong at our end” and hangs. Smart TV app returns to the sign in page after you verify 4 digit code. Mac App and Windows App hang. Android phone app can access the content on the PMS

Any help?

@Przeczochrany Unfortunately PBIs are no longer supported in FreeNAS as of 11.2-U3 /w Legacy GUI as noted in the official FreeNAS documentation. As plugins now use iocage jails, you maybe able to downgrade through pkg. As always, make sure you take a snapshot first.

Fortunately I still have 1.17 txz file to reinstall with pkg, which works like a charm.

LG WebOS issues are present for PLEX on FreeBSD for half a year now (playing direct play with subtitles crashes) and they just close issues raised on the forum, which is annoying.

Somehow it’s been working fine on 1.17, then on entire 1.18 was broken and fixed on 1.18.6…
On 1.18.7, 1.18.8 it’s broken again…

It’d be worth trialing out the latest release in a seperate test jail (clone the Plex metadata across) and get logs if possible.

Plex solved my issue. Just putting it here in case anyone has the same sign in problem. It is an occasional error when you have TIDAL linked to your account. Simple fix unlink Tidal and then re-link

Looking at your seanbunyan69@gmail.com Plex account, I do see that you have a TIDAL account linked to it. In cases where TIDAL has revoked their authentication token for the account (such as happens after changing a TIDAL account password), that can also affect the Plex account. So, you might start by:

  1. Visit your account Other Services page (https://plex.tv/users/other-services)
  2. Unlink the TIDAL account
  3. Link the TIDAL account fresh, which gets a new authentication token

Thanks All

Thanks, that’s fixed the issue on macOS 10.14.6 with iTunes 12.9.5.5. Although read iTunes playlists are not showing but I’ll deal with this in a new thread.

I upgraded to: 1.18.8-2461

Which seemed to alleviate the instant crashing occuring when some clients tried playback. But today I checked on the server and it seemed to be “Scanning” a Library, and being stuck forever on it. I tried closing Plex from the task bar, and its stuck in some god forsaken deadlock it seems. I can’t end task Plex Media Server.exe, nor multiple instances of Plex Media Scanner.exe

I sent you in a PM @sa2000 new dump and log.

I am now on Version 1.18.8.2468. It appears to be working normally for me. The only issue I’m having is that when it alerts me to download new updates, I click download, it downloads fine but then trying to click “install” does nothing. I never see the plex server close, I see nothing happen to indicate anything is executing (task manager or otherwise). I do see a “plex update service” running in services, I tried to stop that and set to manual, restarted plex, and I got a different “type” of prompt to update upon launch but again, the “install” function didn’t appear to do anything. Finally, I just closed plex, went into my update folder, manually ran the latest update (in this case Version 1.18.8.2468) and then plex started back up and is fine. I have not had a successful update from the “web” interface (even on my local machine) in several versions now. Also, my apple tv tells me a server update is available, in the past I could click “update now” and it would do it but that function also appears broken at this time.

For the record:
Windows 10 (1909) 64bit
16 gigs of ram
i7
16tb of diskspace, plex is installed on my 512 SSD.

This pc has never had an issue historically, something in the last few iterations has broken the update mechanism.

Yeah, something has gone utterly terribly wrong in the last few versions…

The only way I can look at issues is through examination of logs captured after the problem and with debug logging enabled beforehand

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

At this point, I can’t provide logging because there isn’t a new version available. I will enable debug logging next time prior to attempting an update, attempt the update, and then report results.

Should the “plex update service” be running or not?

That remains running all the time - a windows restart would start a new instance

Thanks for the clarification… I’ll check back in once the next update is released.
